Силуэты русских писателей / Silhouettes of Russian Writers. Issue 2, by Юлий Айхенвальд (1872 - 1928).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:
https://librivox.org/silhouettes-of-russian-writers-issue-2-by-Yuly-Aykhenvald

A connoisseur of the Russian literature, Yuly Eichenwald wrote about writers as unique persons, and not as members of schools and movements. This second installment is about the writers of the 19-th - early 20th centuries. These essays focus on the oeuvre, not biographic events.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

you can put me down for DPL in this project as well. I have a huge backlog right now and may not be as fast as in the previous project, but if you don't go record too fast I may be able to keep up.

Sonia
I will be on vacation from Wednesday 27 March till Sunday 14 April
and unable to PL during that time. Thank you for your patience.

Thank you, Jo and Sonia! :9: Jo, would you please enter Sonia as the DPL.

Sonia, the family goes first, hope you navigate safely through the emergencies.
Sec.1 is uploaded, but PL can wait. I simply have more time on my hands due to the quarantine... :(

section 1 is PL ok. A great start, I liked the poetry.

Sorry, as you can see, I will be much slower this time. But everybody seems to have a lot of time to record these days, so I have so much backlog that I don't even find time to record my own things. I need to go at a slower pace.

But I will try to do another section soon. At least you make it easy for me and you don't make many mistakes. :9:

Sec.4 is uploaded, no rush.

I know Sonia, I looked at your sections, I couldn't believe the workload you carry . I hope everything is working out fine with your family.

There will be a couple of German lines in sec.3, I hope I did not butcher them too much, don't hesitate to tell me if I did.
Thank you again!

Had a listen to the next section, very interesting. And I particularly liked the little sing-song you put into this one poem :9: a nice touch and it sounded good.

In some places I think I heard a bit of a discussion in the background, maybe a television show ? It's probably difficult to clean that all away and I don't think it's disturbing, I could hear you clear enough. Just mentioning it, in case you are interested.

I found a few textual differences (I think). As always, I let you decide if it's important to correct:

> at 12:52: (p. 15) "больныхъ вдохновеній" - I may be mistaken but I hear "удохновеній". Not sure whether it's important. If you tell me it's a в you said, I believe you, my ears are not the best sometimes. :?

> at 16:00: (p. 17) "не только городъ покорилъ его не только" - this can be cut, as you repeated the sentence differently after this one. I cannot check which words are the correct ones as the text is unclear in the scan. I will trust your judgement on this ;)

> from 27:32-27:35: (p. 20) between "Ей посвятитъ досугъ уединенный" and "Прочтетъ разсказъ и о твоей судьбѣ" there is a rather long pause, and a fingersnapping. Maybe you forgot to cut there a bit ? It feels rather long inside a poem

> at 28:57: (p. 21) "когда недуга черная рука" - I hear "недруга", but again, may be mistaken

next sections to follow during the next days...

I listened to Майков and I liked him a lot. Seems to be heavily influenced by Roman and Scandinavian heroes and gods for his poetry. :9: Very interesting.

Your German is also very good  did you learn it in school by any chance ? Since you asked me to check the pronunciation, there is only one word that is wrong:

> at 11:32 & 11:35: (p. 28) "wäre die Welt nicht die Welt, wäre denn Rom auch nicht Rom" - both times you say "ware" instead of "wäre". The German 'ä' sounds more like the English vowel in "fair, hair, wary, share". I guess the closest Russian sound would be like the 'э' in "это". But all the rest of the sentence is very nicely pronounced 8-)

> at 20:53: (p. 31) "Намъ невѣдомыхъ страстей" - the first word seems to be missing and in the second I hear "незвѣдомыхъ" - I may be mistaken, but I definitely hear an s-sound between "не" and 'в' :hmm: if I'm mistaken, just ignore the comment

thank you, will try to do the next section over the weekend

Thank you, Sonia, very thorough PL. :9:

All your feedback for Sec.2 and 3 is gratefully accepted and taken care of, except at 12:52: (p. 15) "больныхъ вдохновеній". In Russian there is no clear border between "в" and "y", and the sound of English "w" could work for either of them. It's okay here.
Sec.2 became shorter, and the last correction "когда недуга черная рука" slid to 28:50.
Indeed, I took a couple years of German when I was 10 or 11, but have forgotten everything. I tried to imitate the Google Translate pronunciation -- let me know how I succeeded :-)

And more poetry, sec.6, Полонский

ah ok, well you are the specialist here :) it's interesting for me because especially "в" and "y" at the beginning of a verb of motion mean complete opposites (entering and going away, mostly). So I thought it would be important to mention. Better safe than sorry.

yes this sounds excellent now, so I explained it well  if all else fails, I can make you a soundfile, but here it is perfectly understandable now. Yes after so many years, if you don't pratice it in-between, it's normal that the knowledge fades or even gets lost again. I experience the same with Italian. Learnt it in school, I can still understand and read it correctly, but I am not too sure with the grammar anymore to speak accurately and fluently.

Sections 2 and 3 now PL ok.

I am hopelessly behind here, but I try to do another section tomorrow. Patience.

Have a nice weekend

had a quiet hour here now so I decided to have a listen to the long section, to get this one done  Very interesting again and wonderfully narrated.

I have only two small comments, both may be optional:

> at 14:07 and at 33:39: (p. 55 and 60) "centre partout" - I imagine you want the correct pronunciation on French words as well. (if not, ignore this comment)You say "center pa-toi" which doesn't mean anything really. The last word should be read like the English "par-too" (stress on"too")

> at 27:28-27:31: (p. 59) between "будить ночную тьму" and "Соловей поетъ", the pause feels a bit too long for me, also there is an audible click again, maybe this can get shortened a bit

But these two are really picky. For such a lengthy section, this was really a feat

Enough for today...good night
