Natural Theology by William Paley (1743 - 1805).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/natural-theology-by-william-paley/
In this early nineteenth-century classic, William Paley assesses how our understanding of nature reflects characteristics of its creator. First published in 1802, the book went through more than twenty editions, remains in print, and is still a reference point in the ongoing conversation about evolution or creation as the better explanation for the appearance of order and design in our universe. ( Barry Ganong)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/naturaltheology06palegoog/page/n6
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Thanks, Tricia and Larry. I was more than a little surprised to see that this book isn't even on Gutenberg.

Section 1 is ready (12:06):

https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/naturaltheology_01_paley_128kb.mp3

(It looks as though I'll be able to keep most sections of this book below 30 minutes, which makes me happy.)

Me too, also.

Paley's famous watch is PL OK.

But, now we know that even the rock bears the hallmark of creativity, and the further we probe the micro and macro universe, the more amazing the desgin becomes.

Oh, absolutely. I take no polemical position in the so-called evolution-creation conversation. But Paley's object lesson plays such a conspicuous part in the literature that I feel an historical obligation to make his text available. And even his opponents acknowledge the clarity and power of his exposition.

Here's section 2 (11:36):

I could wish that I could knock off all the remaining sections as quickly as these first two, but I fear it won't be so...

This is PL OK. (I'm having a problem with the MW at the moment)

And Paley had no idea how much more intricately the eye is designed that what he knew then!
I remember being utterly astounded at what actually takes place in the retina, and then in the brain when I studied the physiology in detail in medical school. How does this just "happen" or evolve from random mutations?

It's hard to speculate. But your question is related to the more fundamental question of just how, and when, God works in this creation.

And here's section 4 (13:10):

Here's section 5, chapters 4 and 5 (30:04):

https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/naturaltheology_05_paley_128kb.mp3

I see there's a noticeable change in tone around 15:32, but perhaps not a problem.
