Pseudolus: or, The Cheat by Titus Maccius Plautus (254 BCE - 184 BCE). Translated by Henry Thomas Riley (1816 - 1878)

About two dozen comedies of the Roman playwright Plautus have survived the years, with many of them ending up rewritten and recast by other playwrights such as Moliere. This one, Pseudolus, was part of the source for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. (ToddHW)

  • This project is complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/pseudolus-or-the-cheat-by-titus-maccius-plautus/

Plautus will be our replacement for Terence; and even though we have one more Terrence to go when the current one finishes, I thought I should test the waters with this one first. The Plautuses (?) have been translated into English by the same guy as did the Terences, but there is SOME FUNNY FORMATTING: apparently to save paper, if a character's line is short, another character may have a line on the same text line. Beware!

Gender neutral, of course. Kitty will try to keep us following our lines correctly as our Dancing DPL, but as she is also The Cheat, be sure to keep your eyes on your wallet!

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/comediesofplautu01plauiala/page/252/mode/2up
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I volunteer for Harpax. In my youth, it was something you put down the toilet. Suits me.

Hello Jesse (I am guessing that is your name) and welcome to LibriVox and the drama forum especially. :) Always great to have new voices around. And I see you have claimed 6 different roles right away.

But first things first. The way to start is by doing a one-minute-test, to check that your technical specifications are all LV conform. You can read all about the test here: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=1-Minute_Test
Then please upload and post the test in the Listeners Wanted forum: viewforum.php?f=21 and someone will check it and give you feedback or advice if needed.

As soon as the test is ok'ed, please post the results back here, and then I can assign you the sections officially. For that I would need to open a personal reader page for you, so please also tell me which reader name you want to go by. Can be the same as the forum name or your real name, or whatever.

Finally, when you're all ready to roll, here are a few special guidelines for drama recording, which differ a bit from our ordinary projects in the forum:

1) you don't have to read an intro or outro disclaimer, this will be done by the narrator. Instead, record your voice credit at the beginning of the file, which here should be: "Pseudolus, the servant of Simo, read by Jesse Baxter" (or whatever you want your reader name to be)

2) then browse through the text and record all the lines you have to speak. It may not be necessary to read the whole play for a small role, but since you are tackling the main character here, getting familiar with the plot and especially what the others are saying around you would be essential, so you can better "react" to them and act out. Just be as expressive (according to the character) as you can in your role. ;)

3) if there are pointers in the text qualifying your voice, like [laughs] or [whines], an added bonus would be that you act those out in your reading, if possible, to make it all more interesting

4) and most importantly: please leave enough space between each of your speeches, preferably 2-3 seconds. Even when you have the stage directions in the middle of your speech (for example: [sits down]), also leave 2 seconds of pause there, because our editor later on has to copy all your parts and paste them into his master file and it's helpful if he has enough space to fiddle with

That's is mainly. For the moment, I will reserve the sections for you for one month, to give you time to sort out the test. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. :)

Good luck with the test and I hope to hear you soon in here and elsewhere. 8-)

Of course, that's just what I meant. We were too poor to afford Harpic.
