Just checking in! I am really excited for this project as I have tried finding this book in the past without any luck and I have light sensitive eyes, so cannot read much online. Especially after reading Martin Chuzzlewit a little over a year ago I am curious to see what he has to say about America.

There should be one more section actually. When I was asked in the form how many sections, I neglected to count the section 0.

Prefaces and first two chapters read.

Whenever I read Dickens' descriptions of places in England, I take it for granted that he's got the details right, since I have never been to the U.K.
Partway through Chapter Two, he starts describing my home town of Halifax, Nova Scotia as it was in 1842. He first describes the ship being stuck in a mudbank with one of the sailors saying the place is Eastern Passage. I have been many times to Eastern Passage, but on the land side, so I have no idea of a mudbank still lies off the shore.
He says the town is built on a hill with a fortress "not yet quite finished." Obviously it is now finished. We call it the Halifax Citadel and it is one of the most visited historic sites in Canada. Two of my friends got married there in period costumes a few years back. As to the city being built on a hill, that is true of the small portion Dickens would have seen. After the Citadel, it more or less levels off until it slopes downward to the Northwest Arm (the main part of the city is on a peninsula).
He mentions being at the opening of the legislative assembly. The government house is called Province House and it is the oldest of the ten provincial government assemblies in Canada. There is a small display depicting Dickens' visit there in the main lobby today.

All in all, it was fun reading what my favorite novelist wrote about the city where I live.

Moving on to something slightly more serious in terms of this project. The next chapter--Chapter Three - Boston--looks to be the longest chapter I have had to read for any project thus far. I checked with the previous version of American Notes and I see that the reader split it into three sections. I'm going to try to do it all in one, although I am aware that LibriVox has a limit as to how long a section can be. I know I have a slightly faster reading speed than most of the other readers, so I might be able to fit it within the maximum length. However, if I can't, I'll find a convenient place to split it. My only concern if I have to do that is that the section numbers will no longer match the chapter numbers, which might be confusing. How do other readers deal with this issue?

I usually tell readers to say "Chapter # part #," that way they don't start saying "Section #" when it is not needed. Also, the maximum length is about the amount of stuff you can put onto a CD. If you really, really want the chapter to be all in one section, you can do it, but just know that there may be a problem with people downloading it.

Okay, I'll probably divide it into two sections then. And looking at the chapter, I see Dickens did provide two breaks in the writing where I can divide them. I have actually been saying "Chapter [number]" at the beginning of the sections already, so I'll try to get used to the section numbers being one number off.

I have most of the long Chapter Three read now, and it is obvious that I'm not going to squeeze it into the time limit. In fact, I stopped at 1:11:00 and still have several paragraphs to read! I am therefore dividing it at a natural spot.
I recently noticed for the first time that in the MW there is a button to add a new section, so I tried that. I didn't see a way to add it after Section Three as I wanted--it placed it at the very end. Is there a way to put it in the correct place, or should I move all the chapter titles down one?

I started relabelling the chapter names in order to get the new section I added where I wanted it--and quickly discovered that I could drag the sections, which was a lot easier. But now the final section has a blank in the "reader" column which I can't seem to change.

You need to assign the section to yourself. I will do it for you, but it is easy to do if you want me to walk you through it.
