Here's another Mowatt-Ritchie essay submission from me:

“Bashful”

Thanks, Kelly! :) Mowatt Ritchie is an interesting writer. Her psychological depictions of character in this essay seem quite "modern."

Thanks Kelly

Very good piece of psychology by a home schooled young lady who began her publishing career in 1836.

a few errors noted:

2:23 little stumble on individuals

2:33 they imagine that you laugh at them – you said they imagining

3:10 and degenerates into positive insolence – you read denigrates

Here are my corrections for "Bashful" https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/snf072_bashful_ritchie_kst_128kb.mp3

Yes, thanks! The essays in "Clergyman's Wife" have been a revelation to me -- even though I did my dissertation on Anna Cora Mowatt. I couldn't get a copy of this book back in the 1990's. The internet wasn't what it is now. Libraries didn't always make old books available for inter-library loan. Most Mowatt scholarship -- the little of it there is -- focused on her plays and novels. I couldn't get a copy of this book and I didn't get much of a heads-up from any of the Mowatt scholars, so I completely missed out on the fact that towards the end of her life she had a short career as what today we would call a syndicated columnist. This was one of the pieces she wrote for the San Francisco Chronicle that ended up being reprinted in dozens of little papers all over the United States.

She got a bit of blow-back on this particular piece. Men from around the country wrote to their editors to complain that they were already taking heat for being shy. They didn't feel they needed Anna Cora Mowatt telling them they were secretly arrogant as well..

I took it that she was writing about both men and women.

I'm certain she was. Some men, as the essay predicted, felt personally targeted, though...

The Trial of Captain John Kimber

So sorry about the long title, but it is shortened from "The Trial of Captain John Kimber, for the Murder of Two Female Negro Slaves, on Board the Recovery, African Slave Ship: Tried at the Admiralty Sessions, Held at the Old Baily, the 7th of June, 1792", and I thought "TheTrial" was too pithy.

Hi Jeffery, Thank you for your contribution to volume 072! :) You are quite right in assuming that the "over-long," though memorable, titles of yesteryear do, indeed, need to be shortened for today's internet; however, given the historical importance of the Kimber trial (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Kimber), I thought a few more "searchable key words" would be appropriate for the title of this selection.

Our dedicated proof listener Craig (Soupy) will PL your selection. Your file name will need one bit of correction. Your initials will need to be lower case (jls). Please wait to see if Craig finds anything that needs fixing before you re-upload the file. You read very well! :)

Sorry about the two errors. My eyes aren't what they used to be (my scripts are in 18-point typeface), and I had some difficulty reading the wiki page thoroughly. Please do whatever is necessary with the title and initials. I think kimber_trial would be a fine name.

Thanks Jeffery - nicely read

PLOK

but one note:

The long title was read three times in the beginning- seemed over much - I wonder if it could be reduced to two?

What do you think?

Thanks, Soupy.

The length was a concern to me as well, and the entire format of the piece was not like the 1890s books I'm accustomed to reading. I sort of tried to rearrange it in a form that wouldn't seem confusing to the listener. I guess when one is a "student of the Temple", they don't merit an editor. ;-)

I'll be happy to excise one of them. I also have to shorten up the title in the mp3 filename.

Thank you for giving it a listen. I think the people on Librivox would prefer anything over watching the national news. It sure frees up some time. There is construction on the house next door, with hammering and sawing 7 days a week. So for this recording and the previous book, I've been getting up at 4:30 AM. Recording from about 5:00 - 7:00 AM gives me virtual silence except the dogs barking at joggers and dogs being walked.

The only complete title in it was the second mention, so I put the complete title at the beginning and removed the next two.
