This project is now complete! All files can be found at https://librivox.org/living-animals-of-the-world-1-by-various/

The Living Animals of the World, Volume 1: Mammals by Charles Lewis Cornish, ed. (1810 - 1870).
"The Living Animals of the Natural world, subtitled "a popular Natural History", proposed to present the most updated version of the wonders of the Animal World in a new and clearer form. It used photography instead of the traditional illustrations of the life of beasts, birds, fishes, insects, corals, and the subjects photographed were obtained from every part of the world, many of them from the most distant islands of the Southern Ocean, the great barrier reef of Australia, the New Zealand hills, the Indian jungle, the South African veldt, and the rivers of British Columbia. But not only the illustrations were important, since the attention given to the descriptive portion of the work was also meticulous, and the Editor had the assistance of specialists, eminent alike in the world of science and practical discovery. The result is a very thorough picture of human knowledge of the animal world at the time of publication, in 1902.

LibriVox volunteers wish to thank the volunteers of Distributed Proofreaders for their work over the last 20 years to convert public domain books into e-books. "The Living Animals of the World, Volume 1: Mammals" was PG's 60,000th title. Congratulations and Happy Anniversary Distributed Proofreaders! (Summary by Leni)".
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.

Thank you for helping us to keep this project moving so we can get it in the catalog before Distributed Proofreader's 20th anniversary on October 1, 2020.

  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/60000
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

This is the second of our commemorative projects in honor of DP's anniversary (more about it here). It is quite a long book, but we decided to bet we could do it before September 30th, in time for the Anniversary. This was Project Gutenberg's 60,000th project completed! :)

Looking for a DPL and readers.

Wow!
I had my eye on this one, and had started some prep work on it, but got bogged down, so very glad to see it launched. Big undertaking to prepare. I'm pretty full up on DPL projects, but I'd be glad to read the introduction. Maybe something more later.

Hi Leni,

May I have section 20 on coyotes? We just moved to an area where they are apparently quite common, so this will be a good opportunity to learn more about them! Thanks. :)

Kitty,
I thought your rabbit would want to hear the section on her namesake foxes!

Leni,
My cat would like to hear section 30 on Squirrels as he is currently engaged in a long-term deep study of their habits and proclivities. May I read that one?

 Sure, MaryAnn, thanks for claiming. My cats will then have to wait for another volume, since all they care for at the moment are the pidgeons and they are not in this volume, unfortunately...

that may come later....but I fear she may be afraid of some things she'll hear (namely, what those foxes might eat ;) )
