The Life of God in the Soul of Man by Henry Scougal (1650 - 1678).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-life-of-god-in-the-soul-of-man-version-2-by-henry-scougal/
( )
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://ccel.org/s/scougal/life/cache/life.pdf
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    • If you wish, say:

Welcome!

Two comments:

(1) There is already a recording of this in the catalog, here: https://librivox.org/the-life-of-god-in-the-soul-of-man-by-henry-scougal/ However, that doesn't mean someone cannot do another version. Some people prefer to record things that are not already in the catalog, which is why I mention it.

(2) We do STRONGLY encourage a one-minute test (LINK) to check your technical settings. It's not an audition, but to make sure you're exporting at the correct bit rate, have your recording in mono, etc. It would be a shame to record a whole section (or project!), only to have to scrap it and redo it because of some simple setting that is incorrect.

Reader hasn't logged in since posting this. Moving to Book Suggestions to keep the Launch Pad tidy.

Reader: when you're ready to start this, please post in the thread again, and we'll move it back to the Launch Pad for you. :)

Tech settings check out. The volume is a bit too low; needs to come up about 4 dB. You could either record as-is and amplify all your recordings, or you could adjust the input volume. Use the microphone slider in the Audacity window.

There's a small program the spouse of a LibriVoxer developed to check the tech settings. If you're game, you can download it and use it to check the volume and other settings. It's here: https://cgjennings.ca/projects/checker/
The volume information is in the Information tab. We aim for 89 dB, but anything between about 86 and 92 is good.

Nice to know. It's also here at LV already: https://librivox.org/the-life-of-god-in-the-soul-of-man-by-henry-scougal/

Maybe this reader will prefer not to record it, or maybe they want to record it anyway. ;)

Umm, this isn't set up as a project yet.

I'm full up on MC projects and don't have room for this one right now. I'll move this thread back to the Launch Pad for you, and another MC will be along to set it up. :)

I cataloged a project, so now I have a bit of space. :)

As you're the soloist, you're in charge of updating the Magic Window.

Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked here: Instructions for Soloists

Video showing how to use the Magic Window (read the above document first - it has the information on how to log in for the first time, which this does not have):
Magic Windows / Section Compiler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOP4tcr1kl8

I've entered the first section for you as an example. You can fill in the rest.

When you upload a chapter, put the file duration (mm:ss) in the Notes field and the uploaded URL into the Listen URL field, and mark it from Assigned to Ready for PL.

Hi, Matt!

Overall, this is a good recording.
Only one edit needed:

18:04-12 Repeat: “It will many times disdain the grosser sort(s) of vices”

You might take a look at your volume. The recording starts out strong, but as you go along your voices fades lower and lower until it is down to about only 83 db. This is probably something you need to pay attention to in the recording, trying to maintain a steadiness throughout. That can be a challenge in these longer sections. Entirely up to you if you want to do any post-production correction.

Looking forward to the remainder!

Good job. :D

Thanks Larry. I made the correction and have a new mp3 file ready to review. Couple comments/questions since I'm a newbie at this...
1. I hear you on the volume piece. I did add a bit more amplification on the new file and appreciate the wisdom on maintaining steadiness throughout. Will keep that in mind going forward!

2. Do I follow the same process for the upload of the new mp3 file, using the same filename, etc.? Or do i need to name it with a "version 2" or something?

Thanks again,
-Matt

Upload using the same file name. That way the URL in the Magic Window remains the same.
Change the status in the Magic Window to "ready for spot PL".
If the run time changed, change that in the Magic Window as well.

EDIT: Moving this thread to Going Solo...
