The Curious Quest or The Amazing Quest of Mr. Ernest Bliss by E. Phillips Oppenheim (1866 - 1946).

This project is now complete.  All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/the-curious-quest-by-e-phillips-oppenheim/

A sweet, simple tale of how friendship and honesty triumph over money. The protagonist’s pun of a name—Ernest Bliss—foreshadows the plot in which this bored young millionaire transforms his indolent self and finds love. Typical of its era (1919), this book contains a few antisemitic stereotypes. The story was made famous by the 1936 film The Amazing Quest of Ernest Bliss with Cary Grant and Mary Brian.

E. Phillips Oppenheim (1866-1946), was born in London and wrote more than one hundred novels as well as many short stories and film adaptations, some under the name of Anthony Partridge. His 1941 autobiography, The Pool of Memory, is well worth reading. (Summary by Adrian Praetzellis)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi Adrian,
I will MC #25 for you. :) Back shortly with the MW.

Jo

ETA: I've added the HathiTrust link to the scan since we don't usually use PG Australia due to different copyright laws in Australia vs. the U.S. In this case it's probably fine since the book was published in 1919, but if you or your DPL could spot check a few chapters to confirm the text is the same, that would be good. Thanks!

Thanks Jo.

I compared some random pages and found that the two editions are identical.

PL anyone?

OK Good. If we don't get a DPL in a few days, we can advertise for one in Listeners Wanted.

That would be great. This is a fun book and I think you'll enjoy PLing.

I caught my grandson's cold (cough... hack...) so won't be recording until it's gone.

Regards,

Adrian

Hi Adrian!

Excellent reading, but I wonder whether you might have uploaded your unedited file?

At the risk of seeming overeager, I went ahead and noted everything anyway, as a way of warming myself up. I have a feeling things will be much smoother from here on.

Firstly, Checker notes that you have an overall volume of 79.7 dB, below the recommended 86-92 dB range. I think it should be easy to boost your volume several dBs once you get rid of some of the coughs/loud noises.

Also thought I'd point out that right now, you're using the short form of the title, but perhaps you might like to include the full version in this first file? Totally up to you, of course.

Notes:

A number of false starts/coughs before 0:47
0:52 repeat: “This librivox recording…”
1:08 a couple of false starts of “Chapter one…” before “recorded by Adrian Praetzellis”, followed by another “Chapter one”.
2:35 repeat “which he—“
2:53 repeats “each time the butler...” twice
3:19 repeat “Sir James Aldroyd…”
3:37 repeat “which he rightly conceived…”

4:49 false start “swinging round in his…”
5:07 repeats “and submitted himself…”
5:30 long pause
5:45 repeat “thought I had better…”
6:21 repeat “and Dicky knows things.”

7:34 long pause in the middle of sentence

9:08 repeat “do you keep —“
9:23 repeat “none at all”
10:35 loud noise
10:47 repeat “you are suffering…”
11:04 long pause in the middle of phrase
11:10 repeat “you are suffering in the same way from…”
11:32 false starts “just so…”
11:56 long pause in the middle of phrase
12:25 false start “something in his…”
12:43 false start/repeat “absolutely faint sometimes…”
13:07 false start/repeat “you will have good health…”
13:55 long pause with what I think is a little whispered pre-reading!
14:39 repeat “Sir James—“
14:50 false start “you shall have it…”
15:23 repeat “if you can find anyone…”
16:22 false start/repeat “and he had conceived…”

17:11 false start/repeat “Sir James answered…”
17:26 false start/repeat “because the world…”
17:48 repeat “I desire…”
17:52 repeat “to whose relief I like…”
18:28 false start “will you shut the door…”
18:51 long pause
18:57 stumble “perhaps…”
19:00 false starts “Dicky Senn tells me…”
19:10 repeat “I’ll make you a bet”
20:08 false start “you may possibly…”

22:52 repeat “he turned towards his visitor with an…”
23:21 long pause in the middle of phrase
24:01 long pause
24:10 repeat “Bliss replied vigorously”

Thanks again, looking forward to the rest!

Again, very sorry to have wasted your time with that unedited file... so embarrassing. Anyway here's the edited version.
