This is a brief biography of the Scottish physician and suffragist Dr. Elsie Inglis. Dr. Inglis founded a maternity hospital for the poor in Edinburgh (then known as the Hospice, but later as the Elsie Inglis Memorial Hospital), and was known for her charity and willingness to waive fees when patients could not afford her care. She was also a key figure in Scotland's Women's Suffrage Movement. She is best known, however, for founding the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service, which provided staffed teams of female-staffed field hospitals to war zones during World War I. And there's a fine start to what promises to be the story of an interesting woman. What a shame there seems to be no access to her novel manuscript.

Okay. chapter 1 is in. This is a weird little chapter (and I wish it wasn't even there). It is basically a series of tributes, broken up at the end by a very short section, then ending with another tribute. The tributes are footnoted, and I chose to read the author's name at the end of each tribute; otherwise, it's really hard to figure out what is going on. I debated about using "quote, unquote." I find it kind of disruptive to the flow of the reading, but maybe in this instance it would make it clearer?
One other thing - the book has a "Syllabus of Chapters" at the beginning, but the chapter descriptions are not at the beginning of the chapters themselves, so I figured I should just put them in the chapter headings but not read them at the beginning of the chapters. I am kind of wondering about that, as well. At any rate, it's time to cook dinner.

You're right - that's an unusual first chapter. I think you handled it perfectly, and actually, from an auditory perspective, it works just fine. I would also not insert the chapter contents after the titles, since they weren't put there in the actual chapters.

Each BC gets to pick how they want to handle things like Fore matter, Appendices, Footnotes. . . etc. I'm one who likes reading the Forewords, Introductions, and most Appendixes. Sometimes even dedications when they're quirky or substantial. Footnotes - I use if they're non-disruptive, informative, entertaining. . . I tend to leave out all chapter "table of contents," whether they're at the Table of Contents or under the chapter titles - to me, they're unnecessary for the audibook, similar to the omission of reading a book's main Table of Contents. Just my own preference. This one is your book, so you get to pick how you want to do things.

That was nice and short - and how funny! Just yesterday I PL'd a chapter where a mid-19th century woman was wearing a white muslin dress with purple pansies all over it and her fan and cap.

Yeah, that works great to read it without the quote marks cued. They're introduced in the text, so it makes good sense to the ear.

She must have been quite remarkable. Something like a Dr. Quinn in real life.

And I just realized that this book will work for the PopSugar prompt of a book about a woman in STEM. Way back in 1885, even!
