Oscar Wilde from Purgatory by Hester Travers Smith (1868 - 1949).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/oscar-wilde-from-purgatory-by-hester-travers-smith/
Hester Dowden, who wrote under the name Hester Travers Smith, was an Irish spiritualist medium. She claimed to have communicated with the spirits of various celebrities. In Oscar Wilde from Purgatory, she reproduces the text of her "conversations" with the Irish poet and playwright, conducted via a Ouija board and automatic writing. Wilde proves just as talkative after death as he was in life. His spirit revels in the complements paid to his work by Travers Smith and her colleagues, describes how it feels to exist without a body, and pronounces James Joyce's recently published novel Ulysses a "great bulk of filth". Listeners who are primarily interested in the conversations, rather than Travers Smith's lengthy discussion of them, are directed to Chapter 1 and the Appendices. (Rob Marland)

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I am just checking in to say that I am moving house next week: I had hoped to get some more recording done this past month, but I've been a bit busy. I will get back into it in March.

I know that Rob is out for a bit longer, but due back any day. I had some time to kill so took to PL'ing the three uploaded files here.
Rob, you are very good at this. It didn't seem like you had to edit much and were able to do most of this reading in one take.

Section 1: PL OK
Section 2: PL OK
Section 4: PL OK

Take care,

Hey Rob!

Was wandering about and stumbled across this ... what a great project!

I PL'd section 5 ... great reading and perfectly PL OK.

I'd be glad to sign on as DPL for the rest of them as well.

Section 3 is PL OK as well !

That was flawless ...I don't know how long it took in total to pull that one off, but well done sir!

His comments on Joyce were brilliant, and as I've recorded some of the Sitwell's poems for LV, I had to laugh at this:

Q: What do you think of the Sitwells? ... have you read thier poetry?

Oscar: No, I do not spend my precious hours in catching tadpoles. I only leap into the minds of those who have a certain value. Below this standard, I do not sink!

Thanks a lot, Nemo! That would be a great help.

The remaining chapters are a bit more manageable than chapter 2. I should get at least one done per week from now on.

Yes, some of the stuff 'Wilde' comes out with is great! I don't believe for a second it's genuine, but it's still amazing to think that anyone could fake stuff of this quality.
