Hi Sue, I am doing a bit of the same. I am in such despair over the state of governance/politics that I find myself skipping over so much of what would raise my blood pressure (not a good thing at my advanced age). And when I really get down, I pick up my two miniature dachshunds and cuddle for a bit. Helps every time! :D
Peace, David

Hi Rapunzelina, Many thanks for your contribution to vol. 071! :) The political troubles that resulted from WWI still reverberate...

Thanks Rapunzelina :D

It should have been almost the truth about ...

A few errors noted:

2:21 But Servia has small comfort to give the Greek emissary. Repetition after emissary

22:22 the policy it describes – forgot to read it
We regret to disappoint 'those readers who have been following with great interest Mr. G. F. Abbott's articles entitled "The Truth About Greece." Sir E. T. Cook, the Director of the Press Bureau, considers the publication of 'these articles " entirely contrary to the "National interest," and the publication of the above article would be, he says, "very undesirable." We dutifully bend the knee to the Chief Censor and, in the National interest, suppress Mr. Abbott's third and remaining articles.
Paul Harvey would tell us "the rest of the story" :D

I had some trouble editing, because it so happened I just changed microphones and the sound is completely different, that's why I just added the it, instead of recording the whole phrase, to limit the damage... I hope it works well enough.

My thanks to both Andrea and Craig for bringing Mary Pickford at the movies to vol. 071! :)

As Craig pointed out in the thread for Vol. 070, one of our Vol. 070 Short Nonfiction reads [a balloon ascent to 37,000 ft., ably read by Scott Danneker] is the basis for a just-released adventure movie: The Aeronauts. I'm happy to report that The Aeronauts is now available to stream on Amazon Prime: https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B0812BZF9D/ref=atv_hm_hom_1_c_ZWyNDQ_BDQkw1_1_1

In today's Sunday NYTimes there was review of The Aeronauts:
https://nyti.ms/36JtYyX. Since contrary to truth, the movie features a female heroine, the Times mentions that, in fact, there were, in real-life, some early female daredevil balloonists, "including Sophie Blanchard, who was widowed when her husband suffered a heart attack and fell out of their basket over The Hague."

A little sleuthing on my part turned up the fact that Jean-Piere Blanchard, Sophie's husband, made a historic balloon ascent in the United States in 1795, witnessed by no other than George Washington. Blanchard published a pamphlet describing the ascent, inscribed to Washington. It would make a great Short Nonfiction read! https://archive.org/details/fortyfifthasc00blanrich/page/n1

Blanchard's pamphlet opens poetically:

On Blanchard:

Zeus trampled in heaven by seeing the man
Who travel'd thro' clouds and the sky;
Why he is an earth-man, and what are we then
If earth-men do travel like we?

Jupiter says, Trot, Sir, we shan't let it be,
That mortals shall rise from the earth,
And as they all so agree it to be,
Was sacred and sworn by their beard.

But Venus, a goddess so civil and kind,
Obtains his grace by god Mars;
Let come all the mortals that have Blanchard's mind,
For gods--it is only a farce...

Thanks, Mike! :) The illustrations of those tricycles (model year 1884) in the Canadian Wheelman are marvelous! TriciaG should enjoy your pick of reads. If I remember correctly, her husband is into something called "endurance cycling" (?); Tricia has an interesting read entitled Historical Cycling in SNF Vol. 066: https://librivox.org/short-nonfiction-collection-vol-066-by-various/

"The bicycle has doubtless become one of the greatest promoters of healthy out-door exercise... but there is necessarily nothing social in it; in fact it is the most selfish conception possible. Think of a family-man buying a bicycle and starting off for a ride while the wife and children are left at home on the verandah to admire the grace and ease with which their lord and master wheels off to get exhilarating whiffs of fresh country air." Canadian Wheelman, 1886
