Hi,
Thank you for your feedback. I can easily add the silence to these recordings. However, I'm not sure what to do about the volume of the recordings and background noises, as I'm very new to Audacity. I do not use a checker either, but if you recommend it, I can start doing so. I have the microphone volume set to 89.0, but sometimes I speak very softly. Do you have any advice regarding how to fix the volume issue?
Best,
Rachel
Hi Rachel,

I'd recommend getting your hands on the Replay Gain Plug-In for Audacity, it's a nifty function that makes your recordings up to the necessary volume of 89.0 dB and it's fairly easy to get. This forum even has a separate post specifically dedicated to it.
Here's the link: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Measuring_Volume_within_Audacity

Video on how to install it by our very own philchenevert

As for background noise, select a section of your recording where there's only background noise, and use the "Noise Reduction" options in the "Effects" Tab. Then select your whole recording and again repeat the process by going to Effects>Noise Reduction and that should help with cleaning it up background noise.

I think I fixed a long-standing problem I've had with my microphone, which may have been causing these issues. But before I go back and actually fix all five recordings, I'd like to make sure I'm on the right track. Could you let me know whether this fits within all the parameters:

Hello Rachel,
I have just looked at your file, section 34 & the checker shows your volume to 93.1 with background noise at 41.4

I also have seen the suggestions from Phil & the noise level posted on this thread from Sonia.
I am suggesting you follow their advice here.

Hello Kathleen,
I have just copied this and sent it to the BC for this thread, Sonia, so realizing she will know the proper pronunciation I ask you to please wait for her reply. Thank you.
April
Sonia did reply and here it is:
I checked out the poem, and I think in this case, so that it rhymes, "ell ess dee" is indeed a good way of pronouncing it.
Please do record it as you thought and thank you!

Hello April,
Thank you for looking into this. Unfortunately, the laptop won't allow me to install the checker, so I really can't be sure whether the volume is correct or not, even though I have it set at 0.89. Here is my most recent attempt at correcting the problem:

Looks identical to me. Perhaps you could find the help section on LV where you can ask for help with a specific area where you are having problems? That or possibly someone will notice our text on this thread and give you advice in regard to your laptop not allowing the checker to be installed on it? I am sorry for not being more knowledgeable in that area.

Hello,
I appreciate your willingness to read the above sections. I ask that you only choose one of those to read as the limit in this thread is 6 sections per person and I see you have already claimed 5. Please let me know which is the next one you will read?
OK, well I guess I missed that, and went ahead and recorded these this morning.

Here are the previous two I had claimed, and I'll just scrap the rest.
My fault.

Larry, you know you don't have to scrap these, you need only change the intro and you can post them to the monthly poetry collection 8-) at least your work won't be lost. :)

Hi, again.
I'm not trying to be argumentative, but how are we to know that there is a limit for this project?
I do NOT see this in the MW where one would expect any special instructions to be. If that is there, it is not clear enough for me to find, and that's the only place where it could properly be. I've followed this thread, more or less, from the beginning, and I don't recall seeing this stated. But, one can't be expected to read through every post to find it. This just completely blind sided me, so I'm just trying to understand. I certainly would not have even made the claim if I had been aware of this. So, I'd just like some clarification.

I'm not upset, except at myself for not following procedure, but I think it is an important issue to shed some light on.

Here’s where that was discussed. Sorry, I guess nobody thought of the need to update the first post.

I am relatively new at this so how about I say 6 & if someone who knows the magic number corrects me, it will be as they say.
As BC of the project, you’re the boss on that!

You can always change the number later if you see a need, but I’d say you picked a reasonable number!
Thankx Sonia & so it is, 6 is the number of poems a person can read in this thread.
