Thanks from all of us.

Doing the different voices is what makes the reading fun for me. Hopefully they make it fun for the listener too.

Thanks, Kevin, for this interesting side note on the Civil War! :)

The name "John W. Oliver" is a common one, but I'm presuming the author who signed this article was history professor John W. Oliver (1885-1972). Oliver received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1915. https://historicpittsburgh.org/islandora/object/pitt:US-PPiU-ua90f76

Thanks, Betty! :) Ah, nostalgia: "California is the motorist's paradise..."

For some reason, my computer is balking at the Haithi link you provided, so for Craig's benefit, here is a different link to the same Haithi article: https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=umn.31951002796833p&view=1up&seq=41

It's certainly possible. I just don't know. I searched around a bit but found nothing definitive.

Thanks, David! :) A most interesting treatise on democracy and demagoguery! "The peculiar office of a demagogue is to advance his own interests, by affecting a deep devotion to the interests of the people."

A side note: Ainsworth Rand Spofford's "The Art of Reading" (your recording for SNF Vol. 069) has stuck in my mind, and I have actually tried putting into practice Spofford's recommendations on how to tackle the daily news:

The newspaper "is to be read sparingly, and with judgement. I call that an abuse which squanders the precious and unreturning hours over long chronicles of depravity... Read the newspaper by headlines only... skipping all...except for the most important and immediately interesting--and you will spend perhaps fifteen or twenty minutes upon what would otherwise occupy hours. It is no exaggeration to say that most persons have spent time enough over the newspapers, to have given them a liberal education."
