The Tragedy of King Richard II (version 2) by William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project https://librivox.org/tragedy-of-king-richard-ii-version-2-by-william-shakespeare/
Billed by scholars as the first part of the all-encompassing <i>Henriad</i>, <i>Richard II</i> is a richly satisfying probe into the inner workings of monarchical rule and its evolution from being seen as divinely held to a more modern conception that incorporates political cunning. Shakespeare positions the titular Richard in the former position, his shortcomings as England's leader made all too clear when he bungles the handling of a judicial duel, and then later seizes money and assets that are not rightfully his in order to fund an Irish war. At the opposite end is the Machiavellian opportunist Henry Bolingbroke, who assembles enough supporters to help him dethrone the king and become the future Henry IV—the protagonist of the next two plays in this historical series. Written entirely in verse and containing some of the Bard's most florid and evocative language, <i>Richard II</i> never fails to transport its audience back to its time, where the furious machinations of government and kingly rule could be as captivating and intense as any battlefield siege.<br><br>And to perform it all? Three men (<a href="https://librivox.org/reader/11305">Craig Franklin</a>, <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/10789">Tomas Peter</a>, and <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/9905">Brad "Hamlet" Filippone</a>) and one woman (<a href="https://librivox.org/reader/10179">Sonia</a>), determined to give you a performance of Shakespeare's work that you will never forget. You thought you knew your Shakespeare? Well, think again! ( Tomas Peter)
  1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/50095
  5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi
Sonia, could you give this a quick check. I've moved into a new recording area and had to reset everything. I think it's OK, but don't want to go to far until I'm confident the settings are correct.

Cheers

hi Craig

didn't check along with the text yet, but I checked the technical settings (they're ok  ) and I listened a bit to the quality of the audio (it's perfect, a warm tone of voice, no background noise  )

You can absolutely go ahead with this, and John of Gaunt sounds great !!! :9:

I am currently also editing some of my sections for World's Best Poetry, but haven't started on Richard yet.

Have a nice Sunday. Here we had our first snow for this season today 8-)

Second small part. Just trying to get back into the swing of things.

Mainly rain here. It's a shame we can't export our rain, we do seem to get rather a lot of it.

 well we have a sunshiny day today and since yesterday we have had some snow. :9: a perfect start into December.

the first two Gaunt parts are perfectly PL ok. you're the first in, Craig. Well done.

Only remember you need not say the voice credit at the beginning here. Instead do a soundfile only for all the voice credits in a row, it makes it easier to assemble. Check back Tomas' early mail, where he listed all the credits and who should say what.

Thanks ! and have a nice afternoon still

 one down, a few more to go ;)

excellent job on dying Gaunt, Craig  Especially the final part is cool where he shows his whole despise for the king.

2.1. is already PL ok

one small note for 1.3. though:

> at 0:29: "I thank my liege" – I hear "I thank me my liege" which sounds a bit odd

the rest is perfect

thanks

...and Gaunt corrected and reloaded.
thank you Craig, Gaunt is now PL ok

and the marshall is sort of pompous  these announcements were exquisite. He is taking all this way too seriously.

I have one small note:

> at 1:58: "My lord, no leave take I" - you say "no leave to take" which sounds a bit odd. The "to" is easily cut out though.

oh and careful with the filename, no upper-case letters ;) well here it doesn't matter so much, but in other projects it's important.

thanks

All narrations, plus my three "servant" roles, are read. I didn't realize until now that I had used uppercase letters some of the file names. Sorry about that. Can that be fixed on your end or should I upload them again?

Exton's servant is probably one of the two servants killed by Richard in 5_5. Should I upload a dying gasp? lol

 my, you have been busy, Brad ! And what luck that the narrations are quite short and to the point. No unnecessary "asides" in here

the voices for the three servants are excellently chosen, I find. I especially love the desperate gardener  Those three are already PL ok. Only remember to do all the voice credits in a separate file (where you also have to do the "narrator"), so you didn't have to include them here.

 how gruesome. Well you could have included it for good measure, but it's as you wish.
I didn't realize until now that I had used uppercase letters some of the file names. Sorry about that. Can that be fixed on your end or should I upload them again?
no need to reupload, because we won't keep those files anyway, so the filenames are not that important for the separate parts. It's only important for the final file for each act.

All the narration is PL ok except these three:

for Act 4.1.
> at 0:22: usually you repeat "Act 4" at the beginning of Scene 1

for Act 5.1.
> at 0:20: same here, please repeat Act 5

for Act 5.6.
> at 0:42: could you add "by William Shakespeare" to make the end credit complete, please ?

super start, thank you so much !
