Phil

Setting up the MW I noticed Section #29 is pretty large. I've sent Leanne a note about possibly splitting it into two sections. You might want to wait a day or two before moving the project.

Thanks

Tom

Hi Tom, Phil and Maria, and anyone I may have missed in these posts - greetings from Sunny South Africa!

Apologies for delay in responding, but there is a 7 hour time delay. Firstly, thank you SO much to you all for being so patient with me, and helpful and encouraging, how great to work with such a super team, and I look forward to working with you, and learning, on this new project. Hopefully, once I have a lot more experience, I can in turn be helpful to others. From the various posts, am I now assuming correctly that my name has been successfully added to the list of readers? This is a huge learning curve, so I am going to need all the help I can get. Thanks Tom for being the BC and of course Phil, (hi Phil :), thanks for being the MC (Master of Ceremonies hehe). I have the PDF text from archive.org. So next step is we need a volunteer DPL? I'm ready with section one, will probably upload it later today. Most / all of my recording will be done in the evenings or on the weekends, as I am in full-time employment in the day.

Hoooray, this is so exciting, and fun that we are together on the Emily journey.... thank you again !

Take care all you great people,
God bless
Leanne

Hi Leanne. It is a pleasure to be working with you to produce a great audiobook. MC stands for Meta Coordinator but Master of Ceremonies is fine too; we answer to almost anything. So far everything is going well and you seem to be picking up the system fast. If you have any questions ask your BC (Book coordinator) Tom.  Here is a little video about getting to know our forums, all of which you probably know already http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnxpcbnEjoQ&feature=youtu.be

Phil

We divided Section 29 into two smaller sections in the interests of recording time - - - taking total section count up to 34.

The project should now be ready to move into Going Solo whenever you wish.

Thanks

Phil

I just posted this project in Listeners Wanted using the Proof Listening Template. Can you please link it into the MW at the bottom of the post?

Thanks

Ah! I saw this posted but was away on a short retreat, so didn't have a chance to look at it closely and wasn't sure the project was going forward.

But, I would be privileged to join this team -- Tom, Phil, (Maria on the side  ) and our new, talented fortune cookie!

So, I've taken the liberty of listening to this first section of delightful reading.
I think I do agree that this will be a wonderful addition to the LV library, the other versions notwithstanding. :)

So, here are my initial comments.

-- As indicated above, this is very delightful and expressive reading that I think captures the lyric tone of the author's style and tone of the story. ( I recently recorded one of her short stories in another project). So, this makes it so enjoyable to listen to.

-- All technical parameters are perfect.

-- That said, there are some clicks and noises that could be cleaned up, especially in the first few minutes. This is optional, but there is one that you should probably take care of at 0:22, a loud snap.

-- There is an issue with the plosives - mostly the p, b, and t sounds with a bit of a puff or pop, and a general breathiness throughout. This is certainly not severe enough to be a real problem by any means, but it is something you might want to work on. I would suggest a simple pop filter. But speaking further from the microphone and at a slight angle can also improve this. So, these are merely suggestions for your consideration. (Tom can also give you some professional pointers).

With the exception of the "snap" mentioned above, I would mark this as "PL OK."

WIth your approval, I'd be glad to be aboard as your DPL.

Hi Larry,

Thank you so much for volunteering to be DPL! Thank you very much as well for the constructive comments - this is very helpful, and exactly what I need to know, and how to improve. I will definitely clean up the noise you mentioned in the beginning (@ Tom, perhaps we can chat), and I will be mindful of the 'plosives, not sure if that is the right word. I intend working on chapter 2 (section 2) this weekend. This is a whole new, delightful world for me, as I have had no voice training, ever, just years of reading out loud to all who will care to listen (and even those who will not he he). I feel a special attachment to Emily for some reason.

Thanks again, and this is great to be part of such a super team - I look forward to this journey with you all.

Best wishes from Sunny SA.... (although it's raining here today).

Take care
Leanne

Hey Larry

So good to hear you back on board  As you so generously helped me with Our Master, I've taken Leanne "under my wing" after listening to her 1-Minute Test and recognizing a definite rising star. This is going to be the first of many wonderful contributions she'll be donating to LibriVox.

And we are thrilled to accept your kind offer to join us as DPL for Emily of New Moon. Your expertise is already shining through and we appreciate your contributions and suggestions. I'll go back into the header to put your name in as DPL.

As I explained to Leanne, I purposely did not listen to all of her recording of Section #1 for two reasons:
1. That's not my role in this project, and
2. I wanted to be able to just listen and enjoy without turning on a critical ear.

However, I did download the file and, this morning listening to it after reading your suggestions, I could easily identify the items you mentioned. I've sent her an email with screen shots of the waveform calling her attention to the areas you mentioned so she can begin to learn what to look for. I suspect the very loud artifact at 22 seconds sounded to me like she bumped the mic. There are others that also sound like external sounds but are definitely noticeable in the waveform and audible to the ear.

I didn't listen to the whole file. But I offered her some suggestions regarding the plosives.

Thanks, again, for all you do for all of us here at LibriVox. This is an exciting team that's come together to stand behind Leanne producing her exciting maiden voyage into recording.

Hi Tom and Larry,

Happy Friday!

Just a quick update to say that I will be working on the items addressed in the previous posts, i.e. the click at 22 seconds etc. I hope to resolve this weekend, and will upload for checking.

Kind regards,
Leanne
