adrianstephens wrote: October 31st, 2019, 8:23 am How do I generate 128kb FLAC from Audacity?
I'm used to generating 128kb MP3s, but don't see a kb option for FLAC, only a level and 16/24 bit options.

Apologies for the question - I've not saved to FLAC before.
Just do the export as you normally with and pick MP3 and in the drop down in "save as type" you will see FLAC files. That's it!
Hello Larry. Thanks for your reply. I'm still not getting it. When I save as MP3, I can set 128kb in the advanced settings on the save dialogue. When I save as FLAC, I can't see anywhere to set the bitrate. I can save as FLAC without specifying the bitrate fine, but the page 1 instructions say to save as 128 kb flac, and the filenaming of various uploaded files confirms this.

(Mind you, we are talking about 1-liner roles, so I suspect it doesn't matter much in this case anyway).
When you save as FLAC it will only show you the Level and the Bit depth, it removes the 128 option. If you originally recorded as 128 in the project file it will be fine just leave it as the defaults on the FLAC setting.

This is how I named my file and it was accepted with no issue montecristo_Captain Gaumard_29

Thanks again, Larry. I'll assume I'm creating the right thing unless the PL tells me otherwise :0)

I'm interested in reading any small female roles that are left over. I'm new so sorry if I didn't interpret the MW right, but I wasn't sure what the first half of unassigned sections were (since there are chapter lists at the bottom)

Hi! Yeah, if you can't figure out flac, I don't mind the mp3 for the small parts:)

Welcome to LibriVox! In the far right column, you can see it says status, and if it says open then it is available. The lower part of the mw is for editing the chapters, and nothing is open there. There aren't really any more available female parts. All the smaller parts are open for both male and female readers, as is the bigger main parts. I would say that if you want something bigger than the really smart parts, then Signor Pastrini would be a good point in between.

Please make sure you complete the "1 Minute Test" for review before you start actively recording any chapters for projects. This is NOT an audition, but a way to check to make sure all your technical settings are correct, your volume loud enough, etc. You will find the information for the 1-Minute Test Recording here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test. The instructions also tell you how to upload your test and then post in the Listeners and Editors Wanted forum so someone can give you feedback on it.

Also, as this is a Dramatic Reading, here's a few tips to make a great recording.
First, try and make sure you have as little background noise as possible. Follow the tips here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Noise_Cleaning.
Second, when recording a part, think of it as having a conversation. How would you naturally speak? read the text and see how the character reacts to the things around him, and if it doesn't say, then try to imagine it yourself. Let the reactions sound in your voice. A line can be read in extremely different ways, depending on if the character is sad or happy, so just remember to pay attention to the text and what is going on around him.
Third, when you edit after you have recorded (you will edit, we all do), leave at least 3-4 seconds between the lines, so that it will be clear when I edit where the break is.

At the Newbie Guide to Recording: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Newbie_Guide_to_Recording,you can see how to set up your computer to record.

Here is Narrator chapter 18, no noise reduction (sorry, Checker won't let me put it through)
https://librivox.org/uploads/maryannspiegel/montecristo_narrator_18.flac (8:36)

Out of curiousity, what are the flac files for, versus mp3, on this project?

Thanks! mp3 compresses the files more, and therefore the quality gets worse. Flac files keep more of the quality, and in dramatic readings they will have to be compressed at the end into mp3, and I'd like to avoid doing that twice to keep the quality better

Oh, nice. And I assume that also gives more working space for the editor to filter things more when trying to get the various voice bits to flow smoothly.

Here is Narrator chapter 19:

Realized we were missing a chapter from the Abbe, so I sent him a PM a week ago, but he hasn't seen it yet. I'm not gonna PL the ret of it until we have it in, it's just too much job if he doesn't get back to us. I'll work on the narrator and finished chapters for now.
