The Pirate Island: A Story of the South Pacific by Harry Collingwood (1851 - 1922).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-pirate-island-by-harry-collingwood/
( )
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/21072
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    Magic Window:

    BC Admin
  • The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):
    • "Chapter [number] of The Pirate Island: A Story of the South Pacific. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"The Pirate Island: A Story of the South Pacific, by Harry Collingwood. [Chapter]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of The Pirate Island: A Story of the South Pacific by Harry Collingwood. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Pirate Island: A Story of the South Pacific, by Harry Collingwood. "

There should be ~5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.
  • Example filename pirateisland_##_collingwood_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. pirateisland_01_collingwood_128kb.mp3)

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)

If you don't have a DPL, then you might consider putting the tilde (~) in front of your heading.

Hi, OliverBoliver. :) I'll DPL for you if you're looking for one.

And, Kevin, that is - if you weren't offering?

This is set up.

As you're the soloist, you're in charge of updating the Magic Window.

Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked here: Instructions for Soloists

Video showing how to use the Magic Window (read the above document first - it has the information on how to log in for the first time, which this does not have):
Magic Windows / Section Compiler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOP4tcr1kl8

I've entered the first two chapters for you as an example. You can fill in the rest. DO NOT use regular quote marks in the section titles! Those mess up the cataloging system, making the titles disappear in the files. In the two titles I added, I used two apostrophes in a row: '' rather than "

When you upload a chapter, put the file duration (mm:ss) in the Notes field and the uploaded URL into the Listen URL field, and mark it from Assigned to Ready for PL.
School fiction: David Blaize
America Exploration: The First Four Voyages of Amerigo Vespucci
Serial novel: The Wandering Jew

Thank you. I've never been able to update the Magic Window, so it's great that I'll get to learn something new. I'll begin tonight.

Thank you, yes, I will need a DPL and I don't have one, presently. Kevin had not mentioned that he would help out, so I would appreciate your help.

MW looks great! Usually soloists don't bother with word counts - they're more for group projects, so readers can know what they're getting themselves into - but it's not a problem if you want them for your own reference. :)

Moving this to Going Solo...

I added it because it helps me get in the right frame of mind when I start recording. Big word counts mean I need to allocate a little more time. Plus, it was good practice to sort it out.

I've finished recording the first chapter. If I understood the soloist instructions, I upload the file using my own profile instead of the generic one, but then I also update the MW. I'll give that a try, but please let me know if I have misunderstood.

Chapter 1 uploaded,

Code: Select all

https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/pirateisland_01_collingwood_128kb.mp3
, length 30:36.

Very nice reading. Checker passed, PL OK

This looks like a great story, eh? I looked at the full scan; it's a beautiful book, too.

Yes, exactly. When you log into the workflow (uploader) using the generic one, you don't have permission to enter the MW.

Just using your personal one for all uploads makes sense, whether for your solo or any other project. That way you won't accidentally get surprised by a "You don't have permission!" error when trying to get into the MW of your solo. ;)
