Children's Short Works Vol. 033.

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/childrens-short-works-vol-033-by-various/
Librivox's Children's Short Works Collection 033: a collection of 15 short works for children in the public domain read by a variety of Librivox members.
NEW READERS: Please read the Newbie Guide to Recording and do a short test recording before submitting here, just to make sure that all your settings are OK. Then please read this post carefully and refer back to it. It has all the information you need to submit a recording successfully.

This collection is for any children's short work in the English Language in the public domain, preferably less than 60 minutes. You are welcome to contribute as many as you wish, and there is no need to "sign-up" before recording as long as the work is clearly in the public domain. Please post here if you are unsure about public domain status.
Please submit poetry to: LibriVox Short Poetry Collection

Where can I find short works for children?
Try http://www.gutenberg.org/
http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/loccs/pz
or any other place you can find some - but they must be Public Domain - many children's things on the internet are not.

You may read a limit of 4 selections per volume.

Multiple versions are always welcome, so you can record a story that has been recorded before. (If the same stories are submitted twice in the same collection, we will carry the second version over to the next collection) .

You may prefer to submit your recording to one of the other more specialised short story collections.

After 15 recordings are submitted, we will prooflisten, catalog and make them available to the public.

1. RECORD
  • Be sure to set your recording software to: 44100Hz, 16-bit
  • At the BEGINNING Say: "[Title of Work], by [Author Name]" "This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox Recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please visit Librivox.org"
  • At the END, say: "End of [Title], by [Author Name]"
  • If you wish, you may also say: "Read by...your name."
  • Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording or 10 seconds if longer than 30 minutes.
2. EDIT and SAVE your file:
  • Need noise-cleaning?Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear distracting background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The free version 2.1.1. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide. Note: Noisecleaning with earlier versions of Audacity is not recommended.

  • ID3 Tags:ID tags are no longer needed - they are now produced automatically.

  • Save or export your recording to an mp3 file at 128kbps using the following filename:
    • File Name: Put file name all in lowercase, and the title all in one word (no leading articles i.e. the, a, an, and NO SPACES): csw033_shorttitleinoneword_readersinitials_128kb.mp3,
      e.g. csw033_scarletgiantbean_ge_128kb.mp3
3. SUBMIT your recording:
Please upload your finished recording using the LibriVox uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please copy to post in this thread):
Uploader: http://librivox.org/login/uploader
Image

If you have trouble reading the image above, please send a private message to any admin
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: m8b1.
*If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

4. POST the following information in this thread:
  • • The link you copied from the uploader to your file
    • Name of your story
    • Author (birth year - death year)
    • Translator if applicable (birth year - death year)
    • Source from which you read (i.e. Gutenberg etext url)
    • Length in minutes
    • If this is your first Librivox recording, I will also need your name as you would like it to appear on the catalogue page and the URL of your homepage if you have one and would like it linked to your name on the catalogue page.

Want to see if what you plan to record has been done already?
http://librivox.org/newcatalog/search.php?
Search by keywords in the Catalog Search
But don't let this stop you from recording your own version!

Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Thank you, Chad ~ I will PL it tomorrow.

And while I have your attention, one of your stories in the last collection has an oustanding PL Note. Here is a link to the post with the note: viewtopic.php?p=1623649#p1623649

If you could please fix the file as soon as possible, and post the file in that thread, I would appreciate it. That is one of the issues that is holding up cataloging that collection. :-)

Correct me if I am wrong, but the copyright status of this work if okay in the UK, as well as the USA? Just double checking.
Many thanks,
Chad

PL Notes for Little Red Riding-Hood:
@2:10 there are stumbles and repeat of "by mamma"
@2:51 "Was" needs to be cut out - you said "Was had a cold" - should be just "had a cold"
@2:59 - repeat of by "by by mama" - only one by
@3:15 hiding himself needs to be cut - a repeat of sorts
@3:43-3:46 there is an awkwardly long pause. I would make it a bit shorter
@4:03 "the" needs to be cut. You said "the they"

PL Notes for "The Selfish Giant". (Held over from the last project)

There are loud clicks at the following times:
:33, 1:01, 1:26, 2:35, 3:36, 4:40, 5:41, 6:57, 8:29

A number of these are by themselves and should be easy to cut out. Some are under words, I would suggest either re-recording the phrases or trying to de amplify the clicks as best as possible.-
Also, there needs to be 5 seconds of silence at the end.

Pauline and the Matches and Little Bo Peep are PL OK.

Chad, you really need to do your own research on if something is PD for you before recording, it is not up to the MC/BC/DPL to do it for you. If you are unsure, you can always post in the Help Wanted forum. In addition to US copyright rules needed for Librivox, I believe copyright for you is 70 years after the death of the author. Please just do the math if you know the death date.

Hi Kyle,

Welcome to Librivox! Here is a link to your catalog page: https://librivox.org/reader/13702

Nice job! Everything is great except the volume is a bit on the quiet side. It is coming in at 81 DB, and we need it be between 86 - 92 DB (Ideal is around 89 DB).

It should be easy to fix with just a straight amplification. If you need help on how to do that, let me know!

If you could get the volume up a bit and reupload with the same file name, that would be great!
