MARK TWAIN'S TRAVEL LETTERS FROM 1891-92 by Mark Twain (1835 - 1910).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/mark-twains-travel-letters-from-1891-92-by-mark-twain/
This collection of Mark Twain travel letters was compiled by Barbara Schmidt for her Web Site, TwainQuotes.com (http://www.twainquotes.com/). According to his biographer, Albert Bigelow Paine, when Twain took his family to Europe in June of 1891, he left with the knowledge that the McClure Syndicate and W.M. Laffan of the New York Sun would pay him one thousand dollars each for six travel letters. Twain’s letters eventually appeared in numerous papers including the Chicago Sunday Tribune, Atlanta Constitution, Boston Globe in addition to the New York Sun. Readers of his “The Innocents Abroad” and “A Tramp Abroad” will remember his knack of viewing his discoveries with satirical and ironic twists. (Summary by John Greenman and Barbara Schmidt)
  • Text source (only read from these texts!):

I will provide PL and MC with a link to a folder of downloaded PDF's from Chicago Tribune original pages.

as a back-up, the articles are also available (with editor's changes) here:

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I will be trying, in the next few days, to find an actual original source for these articles.
The ones printed in the Chicago Tribune are all hiding behind a fee for access!

There MUST be some free sources for these old articles.

Of course, Barbara Schmidt's use of them, as public domain material, SHOULD be adequate proof of their being in the public domain....to say nothing of the actual DATE of original publication being 1891-1892.

Will Librivox accept the letters as being in the public domain???

actual source: Chicago Tribune 1891-1892.

I have downloaded PDF's of all the Chicago Tribune articles and will provide them to the PL and MC, but for the ease of proof listening, the PL should read from the Twainquotes material.

I plan to read from the actual newspaper article PDF's.

If there are typos or errors found, as a service to Barbara Schmidt, we can let her know.

At least two of the 'letters' can be found here, a 1923 publication: https://books.google.com/books?id=TavkgKBKVXEC&dq

Thanks Kevin,
I know I've recorded at least one or two of the articles...
and thanks for the extra sources.
With the original articles in hand, the project team can choose which source is easier to follow.
Thanks again!!!

Hi John,

The articles were all published simultaneously in The Sun (New York), which is publicly accessible on Chronicling America. Here are the links in case you prefer these for the etext links. I've not checked if the content is identical to the Chicago Herald.

With the small, editorial differences between the TwainQuotes.com material and the (New York) Sun version...
I'm wondering which one to record.
My instinct is to go with the Sun's versions...

No worries, John. I’m planning a similar collection of Oscar Wilde interviews, so I am never off the Chronicling America site!

We've been holding off on picking this up because one of the MCs expressed the intention of setting it up for you. Since they haven't done so, I'll jump in because I know you want to get this going.

The source is OK, but we're not sure about the introduction. We can't use a copyrighted intro even with permission. Could you take her info and reword it so that it's your own?

EDIT: Oh, you meant to record the introduction? No, can't do that. It isn't an out-of-copyright, published work.
