The reading is OK, but there's a lot of background noise and a couple instances of clipping. :)

Tun the Compressor effect on it, with Threshold set at -13 dB, all the rest default settings. That'll take care of the spikes.

Then please run Noise Reduction on the file, maybe with about 12-14 dB reduction.

Let me know if you need further instruction on using these two effects. :)

Thank you for the feedback, here is the problem I'm running into. Both of those effects have already applied to the recording (with comparable or greater reductions because I'm in Audition, not Audacity). They seem to be negated when I put it through the checker to get it up to the required 89 range. I'm trying to figure out how to fix this but nothing has worked so far.

Do you have to amplify a lot? (I assume you don't mean that Checker is modifying the file, but that when you run it through Checker, you have to amplify it a lot, which means increasing the noise.)

Is your mic input level at maximum? If your mic input is low, you'd have to amplify, of course, which would increase the noise.

I could modify the files in Audacity for this project, but that won't help you on future projects. :hmm:

Thanks!

I noticed you listed the duration of both sections 9 and 14 as 8:07, and the latter is 7:10. Just wanted to point that out.

Thanks for pointing it out. It would have thrown me off at cataloging time. :)

Hello,
Here is section 40, duration 1:21, I applied a hiss reduction filter instead of noise reduction filter, it seems to be what we're going for but please let me know.

Thank you!

It had a lot of low-toned noise - really low toned. So this is what I did to it:

- Effect / Equalization and chose the curve "Low rolloff for speech". That caught most of it.
- Effect / High Pass Filter set at 300 threshold and 12 dB rolloff
- I shrank one high peak using Amplify, then amplified the whole thing by 3 dB.

Here's the result, if you'd like to hear it:
https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/oldsoak_40_marquis_128kb.mp3

You can also see in the spaces where you're not speaking that there aren't any extra wave forms. That's a good sign it has caught a lot of the low toned noise. :)

Thanks so much - I'll proceed with cataloging! 8-)
