Title: Norton I: Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico
Author: Robert Ernest Cowan (1862-1942). "Robert Ernest Cowan (2 Jul 1862 - 29 May 1942) was an American historian, biographer, and librarian. He wrote mostly about the history of the state of California."

Hi Tricia, Thanks! :) A perfect finish to volume 069! I was hoping somebody would come up with a reading with a bit of extra character to "crown" the volume (so to speak), and you certainly did! :) :)

Thanks Tricia :D

That was very interesting

Your reading is PLOK

Source: Use this: https://archive.org/details/norton1emperor

but there's a nice html rendering here: https://web.archive.org/web/20180924161446/http://www.emperornorton.net/NortonI-Cowan.html

The first link has pages out of order.

the second is correct throughout.

So I would rather use the second. Which did you read from?

I read from the HTML. The same page images are linked on the top of the HTML page, and are probably in the correct order there. I was unsure about using a Wayback Machine link for a text source on the catalog page. If Jo thinks it's ok, I'm good with it. :)

Hey, it's great to see this group collaboration on sources! While we're at it, I have another NSF sleuthing project to propose. We still need to locate pages 26 and 27 of Tolstoy's "On Anarchy" for Mitteldorf's reading before it can be PL'd ( pages which were left out of the only known scan of this pamphlet, done by the University of Michigan).

I've sent an e-mail to the U of Mich library myself about the matter, and Mitteldorf has set himself to search in New York on an upcoming visit some months in the future. Meanwhile, Haithi lists 11 libraries which have a copy of the Tolstoy pamphlet. The American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, as well as the Biblioteca da la Universidad Complutense de Madrid are probably out, but universities in Dallas, Malibu California, Ann Arbor, Hillsboro KS, College Park, MD, New Castle, DE, and New York (Columbia Univ.) all have a copy. https://www.worldcat.org/title/pamphlets-translated-from-the-russian/oclc/67315105

Here's a recap of the sourcing dilemna...
mitteldorf wrote: August 31st, 2019, 11:19 am Just uploaded two nonfiction pieces from Tolstoy's later years. In these he completely throws out the legitimacy of government, saying that governments exist only to create foreign enemies and then pretend to protect us from them. Even if there was some lawlessness and violence in the wake of ending government, things could not possibly be worse for the average Joe than they are now. (I know YOU'RE not your average Jo, but you take Leo's point...)

Hi Mitteldorf,

Thank you for contributing to volume 069! :) The author, Tolstoy, and his subject matter, Anarchism, should be of interest to many listeners.

Before I can accept your recordings, however, we need to address the question of your sources. Your reading sources need to point directly to public domain (i.e. original) sources. For your first reading, we need a original source for the essay "On Anarchy." ...
There is a 1900 compilation of excerpts from Tolstoy available on google & archive.org: Pamphlets Translated from the Russian by Leo Tolstoy https://archive.org/details/pamphletstransl00tolsgoog/page/n10, which contains an excerpt from Tolstoy labeled "On Anarchy." This excerpt is labeled "from the Private MS. Diary". It follows the text you read, but pages 26 and 27 of the text on the web are missing so I cannot verify the totality. [Note: the missing pages are acknowledged by Wikisource also.
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Pamphlets_(Tolstoy)/Some_Social_Remedies/On_Anarchy]
So, there's the outline of the sourcing quest . . . something to do while your book editor and metacoordinator work behind the scenes to bring SNF069 to print.

SNF070 will be up soon--later today I think. Meanwhile I have a hungry cat yowling for breakfast...

Sue - I would like to contribute a reading of the Tao Te Ching, and I have three sources in mind, in order from the most preferred. Could you please tell me which of these are acceptable to Librivox's Public Domain policies?
Thanks!

Hi Mitteldorf, This should be an interesting project. You'll want to use your 3rd source for the reading: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/216/216-h/216-h.htm.

#1 is a 1988 translation, and would, therefore, not be in the public domain.
#2 is iffy. Admittedly, it is from Gutenberg, which generally means PD, but this is one of those rare "copyrighted" Gutenbergs, a contemporary translation from 2015, copywrited by the translator, and I would, therefore, not recommend using it.

#3 is perfectly safe to record. It is from Gutenberg, and the translator, James Legge lived from 1815 to 1897.

Once you have your recording ready, you'll want to upload it to SNF volume 070. Here is the link to the current volume:
