A Red Wallflower by Susan Warner (1819 - 1885).

A motherless girl finds life very lonely living with only her dour father and two servants in the quiet New England countryside. Lonely, that is, until a neighbor begins to fill her long days and hungry mind with fascinating studies and companionship. These rich days leave an even bigger blank when his parents send him to college and eventually to university in England, determined to keep him away from young Esther. Where can she find the comfort and joy for which she is longing and searching as she grows into womanhood?

• This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/a-red-wallflower-by-susan-warner/

    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/26828
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I see that the current Susan Warner book in progress is fully subscribed, so maybe some of her fans are ready to tackle a new book!

I will claim the first three chapters to get it going.

Hi Hannah,
I'll move you to Readers Wanted. If a DPL doesn't come along, we can advertise for one in the Listeners Wanted forum.
Cheers!
Amy :)

Sounds good. Thanks!

I'll probably let some other Susan Warner readers know that this project has begun.

Hi! I skipped through this book and like it! I’m tempted to volunteer my DPL service. The length of the project is my biggest draw back, but I’m willing to go at it as long as I can if you’re open to possibly needing to switch part way through.

I did run your files through checker, but haven’t listened to them yet. Other than DC being at -2, the technical things all look great. I don't know if that's enough to worry about, but thought you might want to check into it and see if there's something that should change.

Take care :)

Welcome, Rosebud!
That sounds good to me... you can be DPL as long as able and just let me know if you need someone else to take over at some point. Shall we sign you up?

Don't worry about the DC bias in Checker. That just shows that I like to be at the higher end of the range of dB set as LibriVox's standard. Readers who edit their files to the lower end will show a positive DC bias. But as long as the file is cleared as "passed," the technical side is PL OK.

Of course there are still the specifics to check by ear of the intro/outro wordings, correct amount of silence at beginning at and end of file, no obvious mistakes or repeats (this is just a "standard PL," so we aren't checking against the text for word-perfect), no abrupt changes in volume, long pauses, coughs, distracting background noises, etc. But you likely knew all this already!

Thanks for your interest in this project! Let me know if you have any more questions or concerns or if you are ready for our MC to grant you access to the MW.

Thank you for all of that! I like knowing the BC’s expectations. Sure, sign me up!

This was the first time I encountered DC bias at anything other than 0, so I really wasn’t sure what it meant. I checked around a bit, but people who talked about theirs being an issue had numbers like 45. Sounds like you know what you’re doing, so I’m happy not to worry about it! :)

Good to go!

When I searched the LV forum to learn from the posts you mentioned I see I had the wrong idea of DC bias. It must have been a fluke that the louder files I ran through Checker had a negative DC and the softer ones had a positive. I am curious if Checker would flag a file if it showed as far off as the 45-ish people mentioned. But so long as it passes the standards of Checker and is a small number, we won't worry about it. Thanks again for checking!
