Red Rubber: The Story of the Rubber Slave Trade on the Congo by Edmund Dene Morel (1873 - 1924).

Morel explains the history and formation of the Congo Free State, owned by King Leopold II. However, Morel, a humanitarian, focuses on the atrocities commited in the Congo through the enslavement of the native population, leading to the deaths of as much as 50 percent of the population. Writing in the early 20th century, he argues Britain can and should stop these horrific human rights violations. ( Elsie Selwyn)

    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/redrubberstoryof00more_0/page/n37
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I actually didn't need the 23rd section. Can you delete it, Amy? Thanks!

Okay! How do you want to be known in the catalog (real name, pseudonym, forum name)?

Also, are you done editing your sections? If so, please go ahead and upload them so I can PL them :)

I'll have my real name on them. I almost done with the said "history section" although I'm slowly editing it as I go. I've listened to it at work and it all seems to come out fine. I'll upload all I have so far once I wrap up the history section.

Ok I have the sections recorded, I'll get the files all chopped up to the new format as well I will convert them to fit librivox's file requirements. For now I have them on private link on sound cloud for any one to listen.

Only thing I think is missing is the first "Introduction by Sir Harry H. Johnston" I can only find a small snippet from William Lloyd Garrison which I could quickly knock out. here's the version I've been using https://archive.org/details/redrubberstoryof00more/page/n5

Should anyone claim anything before I'm done wrapping this all together I'll claim other section if need be. Otherwise you can put the credits under Kirby Evers and that show be alllllllll for now.

Okay! The introduction that you can't find is in the edition that I have linked for the text of this project (which I think is a different edition from the one you were recording from). The issue with the version you are recording from is that there is a significant amount of text missing from the last page of the scan. When I opened this project, I tried to find a better scan of this book that was the same edition as you were using. However, the scan missing text was the only scan available for that particular edition. Not to worry - I'm pretty sure that they're identical except my edition (which appears to be published before yours) has the Introduction by Sir Harry H. Johnston and yours has an additional chapter reflecting on the aftermath of the rubber slave trade (which does not appear in the my older edition since the rubber slave trade had not yet ended at the time of its publishment).

Hopefully, that makes sense and isn't too confusing!
