Binsey Poplars by Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844 - 1889).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/binsey-poplars-by-gerard-manley-hopkins/
Gerard Manley Hopkins SJ was an English poet and Jesuit priest, whose posthumous fame established him among the leading Victorian poets. His manipulation of prosody (particularly his concept of sprung rhythm and use of imagery) established him as an innovative writer of verse. Two of his major themes were nature and religion. Binsey Poplars by Gerard Manley Hopkins, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal url.]
Then read the poem:
MY aspens dear, whose airy cages quelled,
Quelled or quenched in leaves the leaping sun,
All felled, felled, are all felled;
Of a fresh and following folded rank
Not spared, not one
That dandled a sandalled
Shadow that swam or sank
On meadow and river and wind-wandering weed-winding
bank.

O if we but knew what we do
When we delve or hew—
Hack and rack the growing green!
Since country is so tender
To touch, her being só slender,
That, like this sleek and seeing ball
But a prick will make no eye at all,
Where we, even where we mean
To mend her we end her,
When we hew or delve:
After-comers cannot guess the beauty been.
Ten or twelve, only ten or twelve
Strokes of havoc únselve
The sweet especial scene,
Rural scene, a rural scene,
Sweet especial rural scene.

At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.

Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.

A fine poem, but not the easiest to read. Here's my attempt:

You might want to post the filename of your upload here, too.

Boy, you started off with something of a difficult poem. (I guess that's my fault. That and the planets!) I'll look forward to hearing what you've done when the project is complete!

Oh, I've just seen that you haven't done your one-minute test as yet. I hate calling it a test, frankly. It's just an opportunity for the Board to see that you have your settings adjusted for making contributions here. I'll be back with a link for you.

EDIT: Here you go.

Hi Courtney, I believe this is your reading... :D (Found it!)
https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/binseypoplars_hopkins_csb_128kb.mp3

You must copy / paste the link that appears in the uploader (after the green upload bar is finished)
Your reading is good, the volume is a bit high at 95.0 dB, we need around 89 dB. *
Your DC Bias is quite high at +27, this a problem with some computers, no one knows why. I don't know what recording software you are using, but your file should be Normalized to bring this down.
There is a phrase that is tripping up a few readers this week! at 0:16 you've read "All felled, felled, all are felled;" text reads "All felled, felled, are all felled;" you may wish to correct this.

*You should aim for your wave forms to peak near the 0.5 mark, like this:
Image

You can check your volume using our Checker program - see info at http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker You will find the volume in decibels on the Information tab. For your information, we look for around 89 dB (87-91 is OK)

**Please let me know under what name would you like to appear in the LV catalog and if you have one, we can put your personal URL link on your catalog page too.
You can view your brand new LV Catalog page by clicking your forum name in the Magic Window.

Thank you Bruce (0:25) and Ian. (0:18) :D
You both have read the phrase "All felled, felled, all are felled;" text reads "All felled, felled, are all felled;" you may wish to correct this.

David,
Just for the avoidance of doubt - here's the offending phrase slowed down and pitch shifted
- https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/binseypoplars_hopkins_ik_128kb_extract.wav

What I'm hearing matches the text. :hmm:
Thanks and regards,
-Ian
