The World’s Story Volume VIII: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Greenland and the search for the Poles by Eva March Tappan (1854 - 1930).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project https://librivox.org/the-worlds-story-volume-viii-by-eva-march-tappan/
This is the eighth volume of the 15-volume series of The World’s Story: a history of the World in story, song and art, edited by Eva March Tappan. Each book is a compilation of selections from prose literature, poetry and pictures and offers a comprehensive presentation of the world's history, art and culture, from the early times till the beginning of the 20th century. Topics in Part VIII include excerpts from the Eddas, the life of the Vikings, the Scandinavian kings' fight for supremacy and the race towards the North and South Pole. ( Sonia)
 1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
 2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
 3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
 4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/worldsstoryhisto08tapp/page/n10
 5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

And the (hopefully) long-awaited Book 8 in this series is launched ! For those of you who suffer under hot temperatures, here's what might cool you down. We're staying exclusively in the very Northern Regions of Europe, and in the final part of this book we're travelling to the South Pole, so: colder it won't get.

Just like in the previous books, here a reminder of the special notes for this project:

1) I would like to have the footnotes included. Just put them after the sentence of the footnote marker, wherever you think it fits well. Say: “Footnote - [read footnote] - End of Footnote”. This is for pure footnotes, not for the editor's intros. Please read those the way they are written in the text.

2) the explanations to the illustrations will again be included. They have their special sections. Please include every detail from the title, including, painter, time, or whatever is written in the book. Basically everything that is written in the MW. And please also include the line "photograph/painting, page xx" at the end of the title.

You may have noticed some links in the Notes sections this time. The archive scan missed a few illustration descriptions, but I managed to find them in another scan of the same edition. The links in the MW link to those texts.

3) I have noted down in the MW where to read the long LV disclaimer. All sections under 3 pages long can use the short disclaimer. Check the first post on how to read the intros.

For our drama fans, I'm so sorry but we only have one play, but at least it's Hamlet by William Shakespeare. And all roles are gender-neutral of course.

As in the previous books, please say your voice credit this way:

For section 46: "recording by Sonia as the Narrator, Alan Mapstone as Bernardo, Jim Locke as Francisco, Eva Davies as Horatio, Tomas Peter as Marcellus and Nemo as Hamlet".

thank you

This project is officially launched now 8-)

Sandra and Tomas asked me to surprise them with a few sections, so here you go:

Sandra:

14. Iron-Beard, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
20. Birchlegs carrying King Hakon, by Knut Bergslien
32. How Ragnar Lodbrog won a wife and a nickname, by Saxo Grammaticus
76. Iceland Part III: Iceland and its people: Historical note

Tomas, I gave you one section from each region:

5. Thor fishes for the Midgard Serpent, from the Younger Edda
29. The hall of the early chiefs, by Henry Morley
46. the role of Marcellus in Hamlet, since I know you like to be in the play as well 8-)
54. King Volmer and Elsie, by John G. Whittier
64. How the Sagas came to be written, by Sabine Baring-Gould
81. Greenland Part I: Stories from the history of Greenland: Historical note
98. The Northwest Passage, by Sir John Everett Millais

I hope you both like my selection for you.

oh, I'm happy that you're the historical narrator again. :9:

Well a few sections from Norway, Iceland and Greenland have already been assigned. So how about I give you all the historical notes from Sweden, Denmark and the Poles ? That would be 8 sections total ? Is that suitable ?

hey Philip, good to have you in this part as well :9: You made a great choice. I actually was tempted to take Beowulf for myself, but 10 pages was a bit too long for my taste  But I will have fun to listen to your adventure-packed delivery.

Thanks for the claims

I'll take 4, 13, 62, and 102.

Is there just the one drama in this book?

yes I know, it's awful :( I almost screamed when I realized there was only one. But the roles are gender neutral, so if you want to grab one, now's the time.

And thanks for the other claims :)

well since Nemo is Hamlet, would you like to be Horatio ? Or do you prefer a shorter role ?
