The Common Law by Oliver Holmes ( - 0).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/the-common-law-by-oliver-wendell-holmes-jr/

A history and review of the common law in the United States. ( )
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2449
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    Magic Window:

Hi TB27.

I'll be happy to MC this for you, but this is an ambitious first project. As a new reader, we strongly recommend that you record a section or two in group projects before embarking on a solo, so that you can get a sense of the amount of time and effort a commitment to a solo recording would entail, as well as become a little more familiar with the community here and our process for submitting files, prooflistening, etc. before starting off on a solo project. As a soloist you will also be expected to be your own BC. If, however, you have prior recording experience and are sure you are comfortable with recording and editing audio files, then you can go ahead with the first section of this project, and I'll set this up in the database once you upload your first finished file ready for PL.

TB27 -

Haven't heard back from you, so I am moving this thread to Book Suggestions until you let me know that you are ready to get started.

This project is now set up in the database. Since this will be your first project as soloist/book coordinator(BC), you will need to set up a password for access to the workflow system so you can enter the information into the section compiler which then appears in the "Magic Window" in the top post. As soloist it is your responsibility to do this. Here are some links to detailed instructions for logging into the system and setting a password the first time, as well as for entering and editing information in the section compiler.

First Time Logging in to the Workflow

Instructions for BCs and DPLs

A version of the above is also in the LibriVox wiki in case you can't access Google Docs for some reason.

BCs - How to Update the Magic Window

Please also note that I have edited the author's name in the intro and outro text.

If you have any questions, let me know. I'll leave this thread here in the Launch Pad for a day or so longer before I move it to the Going Solo forum, to see if a DPL (Dedicated Prooflistener) volunteers. Looking forward to working with you.

Hi,
I see you have not posted to the forums (and specifically to this project thread) since your last post here in November 2019. Please respond if you are still around and have time to record any time soon. If I don't get a response back from you within the next 2 weeks then I will have to assume you are no longer available or interested in continuing with this project. As a result, this project thread will be removed from the forums and the project will be added to the abandoned solos list and made available for other readers to complete as per our policy for abandoned projects.
Hope to hear from you,
Jo

Hi. Great to see your progress here. Please see the information and instructions I posted above for obtaining a password for the Workflow system and editing the information in Magic Window (MW) to add these links and times. As a soloist, you are expected to be your own BC. I'll enter the first few for you as an example.

Once you update the MW, either you can post in Listeners Wanted for a prooflistener. See

I also see that section 3 is 98 minutes and section 5 is 73 minutes. Typically we suggest keeping individual files to about 72 min so they can be burned to a CD by listeners if desired. (Yes, I am aware that most listeners use apps or stream online rather than using CDs, but there are still people out there who for one reason or another do.) You should consider splitting section 3 into part 1 and part 2 and add an extra row in the section compiler to accomodate the extra file.

Hi Jo,

Thanks for coming back to me so soon.

I am trying to login to the Magic Window Section Compiler page with my personal login and password (following the steps listed on the GoogleDoc/Wiki), but I keep receiving the message, "You don't have permissions for this area." I would be grateful for any suggestions on how I should proceed. Thanks!

I'll split up the chapters as soon as I can access the Magic Window/Section Compiler.

Make sure you are not logged in to the uploader with the generic uploader password. If so, you need to log out and then log back in with your forum username and the new workflow password you chose.
