Short Ghost and Horror Story Collection Vol. 034

This project is complete and all audio files can be found in the catalogue: https://librivox.org/short-ghost-and-horror-collection-034-by-various/

NEW READERS: Please read the Newbie Guide to Recording and do a short test recording before submitting here, just to make sure that all your settings are OK. Then please read this post carefully and refer back to it. It has all the information you need to submit a recording successfully.
  1. How to submit a story, and 'how it all works' here
Please select and record any short ghost or horror story in the public domain. Try to stick to works that run less than 60 minutes. There is no need to "sign-up" before recording... as long as the work is clearly in the public domain, just start recording. Multiple versions are always welcome, so don't worry whether someone else has recorded your selection already; we're happy to hear your version too. :)

A ghost or horror story should have something of an otherworldly or gruesome nature at its core. (Preferably, it should be nominally fictional, but there are enough 'true' ghost stories that will be accepted into this collection as well.) Take a look at the various collections in this forum and decide which collection your story would work best in. You can find suggestions here.

Please note that a lot of Lovecraft's work is still under copyright - there's a thread here that has an up-to-date list of confirmed PD stories.

Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which story you are submitting to the collection. Please include all this information:

    • link to the text source
    • author name
    • title of the story
    • duration (runtime) of the file
    • if this is your first recording: how you would like to be listed in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal web site/blog.

Read points 5. to 7. below for what to do before, during and after your recording, and how to send your file.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
No. This collection will be open until it is full (20 stories have been submitted), at which point another one may be started.
  4. Where can I find horror and ghost stories?
A good source for ghost and horror stories is https://web.archive.org/web/20141105215835/http://www.classichorrorstories.com/. Of course there will also be bunches on Gutenberg.

Previous Short Ghost and Horror Collections can be found here - duplicate versions are fine, though not in the same volume.
  5. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  6. DURING recording:
Leave no more than 0.5-1 second of silence at the beginning of your file.
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "[Story title] by [Author name]. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
      "[Story title] by [Author name]."
    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of [Story Title]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording!
    .
    .
  7. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit (optional).

The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
File Name: (lower case, separated by underscores):

    ghohor034_shorttitleinoneword-noarticles_author_readersinitials_128kb.mp3, e.g. ghohor034_roomintower_benson_ce_128kb.mp3
    .
    .
  8. ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)

Please ignore tags for this project - they will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.
    .
    .
  9. Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
Any questions?
Please post below or PM me.

Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I love this story! Thank you for offering it! And congratulations on your first Librivox recording!
I will need the file name in all lower case though, so when it has been proof-listened, please re-upload with the amended file name (and any needed edits that may come up).

Is this text ok? I can't see any date of publishing on the site?

It should be OK!
If you're listening while looking at the text, you can use this text https://archive.org/details/allyearround12dick/page/14 to see if there are any differences.
First published in 1864.
The story begins where it says "V. ANOTHER PAST LODGER, etc"

This has to be adjusted:
Volume: 83,4 db (+5,6 db) – you can only adjust this when compressing the file before because of the peaks.

Following is only advised for editing. For me the clicks and mouth-noises are minimizing the fun to listen to the file. Sharp clicks like the first one should be cut or silenced, lower clicks are disturbing me but don‘t have to be edited mandatory.

clicks / mouth-noises at:

start; 4,76 sec; 18,5 sec; 19,07sec; 40,97 sec; 1:08,72 min; 1:12,2 min; 1:46,69 min; 1:51,85; 3:14,00 min; 3:16,77 min; 4:07,12 min; 4:31,97 min; 4:43,62 min; 4:56,26 min; 5:16,38 min; 5:32,51 min; 5:50,39 min; 6:16,52 min ; 6:20,04 min; 6:27,04 min; 6:37,75 min; 7:04,00 min; 7:08,60 min; …. (much more on a regular basis)

One last note: File does sound a little bit tinny. Too much noise-reduction or any other processing? This I just mentioned for future-recordings to look at – it‘s not this disturbing for me to dismiss this recording ;-)

Aside from the technical things: I like your reading :-)

A first recording for me: https://librivox.org/uploads/rapunzelina/ghohor034_atgate_mylajoclosser_bp_128kbps.mp3
Something for the collection.

I wish there were more by Myla.

Text here: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/15143/15143-h/15143-h.htm#Gate

I can't tell if "The Phantom Motor" by Jacques Futrelle can be made into a LibriVox recording.
How would I know if I could record and submit it? I don't see a previous version of it.

"Phantom Motor" text is here: https://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/f/futrelle/jacques/

Thanks.

Hello! Welcome to Librivox! And thank you for adding to this collection!
I'll look up about the Phantom Motor and let you now as soon as possible.

Since you are a new reader, how would you like to be credited in our catalogue? Will the forum name do?

Thanks, Rapunzelina. Sounds good.
My forum name in the catalog would be fine.

Volume needs to be adjusted - - 2,7 db would be perfect

At the end there should be 5 sec. silence – you have 2 sec. only.

Sound and reading are perfect - I enjoyed very much listening :-)
