Fuel of Fire by Ellen Thorneycroft Fowler (1860 - 1929).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project https://librivox.org/fuel-of-fire-by-ellen-thorneycroft-fowler/
"Then was there war in the house of Baxendale. Guy had made up his mind to wed the fair daughter of the forester; while Sir Stephen and Dame Alice his wife had made up their minds — with equal firmness — that no son of their noble name should mate with a daughter of the people". A rumor started that the girl was a witch and so she was burned. However before she was burned she cursed the family who condemned her:
"First by the King, and then by the State,
And thirdly by that which is thrice as great
As these, and a thousandfold stronger and higher
Shall Baxendale Hall be made fuel of fire".
Ever since, the Baxendales cannot be truly happy, for they cannot have true love. What is life without love? They do their duty, rule over the land, but cannot be happy. Can the curse be lifted? Can a Baxendale experience true love?
This book is a protest against the prominent view of marriage at the time. Against the values of ambition and duty, and of course against social class. It offers a new way to look at marriage, the modern way of true love. A year after publishing this novel, the author, a daughter of a viscount, would marry a senior teacher at a navy school. Not someone from her own class. However the marriage was described as very happy. ( From the book's prolog with additions by Stav Nisser.)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/fueloffire00fowl/page/n7
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

this sounds like an interesting book, Stav. I can set up a MW for you. Will you manage to fill in the sections yourself, you do you want me to help there as well ? I inserted the first two sections already to start you off, but don't mind filling them all in. Just let me know. :)

MW coming soon....

Ok, I am sorry but my screen reader doesn't read me the page numbers properly. Could you pleas fill in the mw? All the page numbers are written in the table of contents. To make things easiest, I usualy fill in the number of pages of a chapter for example (chapter 1 12 pages). I will write a note that each page is about 2 minutes of final recording. Thanks in advance,
Stav.

all right, no problem, I can fill in the chapter titles and pages. BTW I noticed some missing pages in the link you provided :? but I found another PD version, so we're gonna use that one. https://archive.org/details/fueloffire00fowl/page/n7

Also I think I can move us to Readers Wanted now, we'll find a DPLer along the way.

Hi Stav

Since you are there, did I do the intro correct - by saying, Section O, or should I just say Prologue?

I liked the prologue, and will return, not right now, because I am doing a solo and chapters in 2 other books.

Hay, what ever you did was ok. I heard readers doing both. Don't worry about it.

Hey John :) you did it absolutely correctly. For the prologue it may not be so important, but it's always best if we have continuity in a project's intro disclaimer. So best always stick to the info in the first post, you always can read there an example of how the intro should be read for that particular project. Some BC's prefer Section others Chapter, it also depends on the structure of the book.

Thanks

I liked the prologue too. I just had a listen to your file, John, and it's an awesome good start into the book. :9: Wonderfully and engagingly narrated. I can mark it PL ok.

There was one tiny deviance from the text, which is not too important in my opinion, but I'll point it out, in case you want to be word-perfect.

> at 8:48: (p. 5) “married in their own class and lived happily ever after” – you say “married happily ever after”, which sounds a bit strange as it's not how the normal saying goes, but I let you decide whether you want to correct this

Stav, I am interested in getting to know the rest of the book, so I'll put myself in as DPL.
