Written in 1908 by socialist critic and gay rights activist Edward Carpenter, The Intermediate Sex is a thoughtful, humanizing, and frequently utopian treatise on homosexuality that defies some of the more stultifying notions about human sexuality of the time. In it, Carpenter argues for the legitimization of “uranianism,” recounts the history of homosexuality from antiquity to present day, highlights the great social and aesthetic work done by Uranians, and outlines some of the transformative social effects that might occur from a greater acceptance of homosexuality. Note for potential DPLs and MCs:

1) This is a relatively short book, but I'm planning on taking my time on it. My current plan is one chapter a month, but I'm taking a more lackadaisical approach to recording this one. It's a difficult book with a lot of long chapters, so I think this might be the best approach to getting this into the catalogue (especially with my busy work life right now).

2) I'm not sure what to do with the footnotes. I'm tempted to cut them out of the recording altogether, but some of them (like the anecdote about Queen Christina meeting the pope) are really fascinating and add texture to the text. Others are just citations... and honestly, even the best footnotes break up the flow of Carpenter's central argument. I'm worried that it would muddy up the recording a little bit. I'm also cutting the appendix out entirely, since it's essentially a long works cited page punctuated with isolated quotations.

3) I've already recorded the preface and chapter 1.

Interesting idea -- and certainly something I'd be amenable to. Unfortunately, I think most of the pertinent footnotes I'd like to include refer directly to the main text. I'm not sure if they would all make sense in isolation. But with that said... it's definitely something I'm considering.

I think it is permissible to read only the footnotes that you find helpful. At least, that has been my practice.

I might wind up reading some of the more interesting footnotes and cutting out the rest then. Most of them are irrelevant, but some of Carpenter's historical footnotes are just too juicy to leave out.

From a technical standpoint, the volumes were borderline (Sec. 00 - 86.0dB) and slightly below (Sec. 01 - 85.9dB) the lower end of the acceptable range, according to Checker. You may want to amplify both sections by about 3dB. Let me know what you think.

Otherwise, Sec. 00 was fine.

I'm not surprised about the repetitions -- I had some trouble with that particular paragraph and might have read it about 20 times. Eep!

This project should get especially difficult once we hit Chapter III, which is littered with random snatches of foreign languages I can't speak. Please do not expect linguistical perfection.

Anyway, I've boosted the audio to both chapters and made that one correction. I'll probably have the next chapter uploaded in 3-4 weeks. Have a great Memorial Day weekend... and thanks again!

Thanks for the head's up; I'm fine with whatever timetable you're working with for this project (my recording projects usually take some time between sections, so I understand). The same for the foreign languages. Your best shot at it is all that can/should be expected (from a single language speaker myself, who would probably butcher other languages).
