Ok, well I am a high schooler in English class... this year we've read (not going to include authors because I don't know them) Cry the Beloved Country, of Mice and Men, Night, Macbeth, Frankenstein, and I can't remember the rest. We've read more in previous years, just don't remember them

I remember being assigned to read Night and Lord of the Flies (both are hard to forget). I just re-read LOTF recently, though, and feel I understand it more now.

Beowulf
Canterbury Tales
Scarlet Letter
House of the Seven Gables
Billy Budd
Antigone
At least three of Shakespeare's plays
Lord of the Flies (which was paraded as contemporary, aka controversial)
Old Man and the Sea
Sound and Fury
Death Be Not Proud
Travels with Charley
and loads and loads of poetry

At catechism we read The Little Prince. (There must be a God!)

I could find more in my library. Our instructors allowed us to keep any paperbacks assigned.

P.S. I read The Godfather in 7th or 8th grade and was mobbed by my male friends so they could read page 27. (Funny what one remembers.)
