The Man with the Hoe and Other Poems by Edwin Markham (1852 - 1940).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-man-with-the-hoe-and-other-poems-by-edwin-markham/
Edwin Markham was an American poet whose poems often drew attention to the laborers of the world and frequently expressed elements of faith. The Man with the Hoe, perhaps his best known poem, was written after seeing a painting of the same name by the French artist Millet, who also depicted working men and women in rural settings. Many of these poems were previously published in The Atlantic and other magazines. ( Larry Wilson)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/manwithhoeotherp00mark
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Well, I was going to post this as another collaborative poetry project, but after reading through, I decided I would like to read them all. :( I've never done a solo poetry project before, so this will be an adventure.

May I use the usual abbreviated intro for poetry?
I thought some of combining some of these short ones, but I think each one deserves its own section. (?)

The Man with the Hoe is special to me because it was one of the first poems that I incorporated into an Oral Interpretation piece that I presented in collegiate forensic speech contests. I practiced and performed it a lot. (That reminds me that I'm going back next month for a reunion of my college class. I won't mention which one it is).

Hi, it's me again! :) I will set this up - just a moment.
And could I please also be the DPL?

I think you can safely use the abbreviated poetry intro. Also, combining or not-combining several poems in one section is entirely up to you! If you think they deserve a section each, so be it.

Kristine :)

Oh, an MC - and a DPL!
Thanks so much, Kristine. :9:

I'll set the MW up soon.

This is going to be something I fit in between my other projects when I just need to read a few poems, so I've set myself the two-month time table. It may not take that long, but we'll see how it goes.

Thanks again! :D

I always feel guilty working on a solo when I have group projects going, but slipped a few more poems in, now Ready for PL. I'll try to be more regular on this so I can go on to some other solo work that I want to do.

These are all OK, great poems and beautifully read!
Only exception: section 12
In the line "That are the rest and shelter of mankind" I hear you say - THEY are the rest... As it changes the meaning of the line completely, I think it maybe would be worth correcting... At 0:20

Thanks for the good PL, Kristine!

I've posted a new recording for 12, and sections 14-24.

I've recorded through 60, but won't put them all up at once.
