Nutcracker and Mouse-King by E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776 - 1822). Translated by Mrs. St. Simon ( - 0)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/nutcracker-and-mouse-king-version-2-by-e-t-a-hoffmann/

Christmas Eve Maria receives a nutcracker. At midnight, this gift comes alive and brings her into a world full of dolls, candies and rose scent. The little wooden soldiers of her brother Frederic and the toys that are in the glass cabinet of the family room also come alive. At the same time, the mice and their king with seven crowns appear in the living room. Battle ensues.

In fact, it turns out to be a stunning Christmas for little Maria.

The tale "Nutcracker and Mouse-king" of Hoffmann was adapted into a ballet in 1892 by Tchaïkovsky.

Summary by Aïda Boumaza
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/nutcrackermousek00hoff/page/n7
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

In case you mind, there is a version of this in the catalogue. That doesn't stop you reading it, it's just that some people prefer to add something different to the catalogue.

Hi Annise,

I just finished recording this book in French and, if it's possible, I would like to record it in English.

I love reading. I will participate later in the uncompleted books.

Thank you Annise,
Aida :)

Hi, Aida! I will set this up for you.
Only, I think that in the case of translator here "St." does not mean Saint, but just an abbreviation of the woman's name who translated the book. So it would be better to say "translated by Mrs St. Simon" as it stands in the book.

Kristine :)

I think I would like DPL this myself... I don't know how I did manage it, but I have never read this book and not even seen a single play/movie/opera based on this work. Time to remedy that!
