The Elephant Man and other reminiscences by Frederick Treves (1853 - 1923).

In 1884, Professor Treves saw Joseph Merrick (known as the "Elephant Man") in a shop across the road from the London Hospital. Being also a teacher at the University, he brought Merrick to the London Hospital as a teaching case, and Merrick lived there until his death in April 1890. This book of "reminiscences" includes the story of the "Elephant Man" as well as other interesting cases from Sir Treves' practice as a doctor. (Summary by Beth Thomas)
  • This project is complete. All audio files may be found in our catalog at https://librivox.org/the-elephant-man-and-other-reminiscences-by-frederick-treves/

    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/elephantmanother00trevuoft/page/n7
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Todd, I've just realized that Chapter 1 is a massive 38 pages. I'm not sure if I will need two sections for it or not. Problem is that it's the first section and will throw all the section numbers off. Would it be possible to create a section 0 later if I need it? Or maybe call the first section 0 now? Then all the other chapter numbers won't be affected.

Yes, I can add other sections to the MW, including a 0 if you need it. Though there is no problem having chapter and section numbers different - so long as you change the initial intro/outro text to be about sections, not chapters.

Thanks, Todd

Hello, I'm a new volunteer, but my test came out square.
I'd like to volunteer to read section 2 The Old Receiving Room.
You can credit me just as "Mike Casey", I don't have a URL or anything to plug.

Looking at the text, it's very, kind of, conversational, but with a nice cadence and tone to it that should really make a fun read. Some of the other projects I've looked at can seem a little stuffy, or just have challenging intonations due to the amount of time that has passed.

I should be able to have it recorded this weekend, and definitely cleaned up by the next.

Please let me know if I can join you. I've read all the guides, but very open to learning if there is anything I'm missing.

Best!

The Elephant Man has very impactful film and play adaptations. It's nice to see the original volume now in the public domain. May I claim section 3, "The Twenty Krone Piece"?

I managed to devote some time and get Chapter 2 recorded and edited. It sounds alright to me, but please let me know if there is anything more I could/should be doing.

Mp3Gain shows it at 88.7dB for me.

I'll take chapters 11 and 12, too, if you'll assign them to me. Glad I'm not a surgeon back in the day.

Thanks Mike, the only other thing I need is the duration of the file in minutes and seconds, like this: mm:ss. I currently have your file as 22:41, but usually it works as a double check if you post the duration as well. That way if my file is 22:41 and yours is 33:41, we know the uploader chopped off 11 minutes of your recording!

This file is now in the MW and those other two chapters are assigned to you. Yes, as a doctor myself I'm interested in old medical writings - but glad I wasn't working back then!
