I'm trying to work out the missing words of that poem.

"Beware the ice!" I heard him scold,
"Which is not safe unless 'tis cold:

Along the slippery ground.
And others came, and with a sledge
They crept around the dangerous ledge,
And lifted dripping o'er the edge
The maids so nearly drowned.
