Some_Old_Bird wrote: March 26th, 2019, 10:54 pm Hi all!

I was interesting in a few letters from the Eisenhower administration
https://www.gutenberg.org/files/16142/16142-h/16142-h.htm

and this magazine's coverage of the Boxer Rebellion (can I do that? a stand alone article instead of the whole magazine?)
https://www.gutenberg.org/files/28712/28712-h/28712-h.htm

Would you like them?
Hi Some_Old_Bird, Welcome to the Nonfiction Collection! :)

Yes, both of the items you mention would be suitable for the Nonfiction Collection. The Eisenhower administration material was published by the U.S. Government, which puts it in the public domain. And the American Missionary magazine issue dates from 1900, well before the cut off date of 1923 for public domain. In choosing a letter or a stand alone article to read from these sources, please just be sure that you read your chosen selection word for word, no words changed, no words added or left out in accordance with LibriVox policy.

These are interesting choices, and we look forward to your contributions to the Nonfiction Collection! :)

perfect! I'll get on those in the coming days. Is there a bigger archive of periodicals and government publications? I'd like to do more of these short non fics but Project Gutenberg's collection is so limited these were the only ones I was interested in. It would be really cool if there were an archive of ALL governments publications like not just the US ones.

Most if not all branches of the U.S. Government have archives of documents available on the internet. Here is a link to the State Dept, Office of the Historian, a trove of historical documents on line: https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments

(Although Walt Whitman and Herman Melville, among others, wrote movingly about the traumas of combat, Bierce was the only major author to have actually been a front-line soldier in the Civil War.)

Thanks

Here is my contribution to this collection:

Jonathan Swift
A Modest Proposal
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1080

21:59 in this my version:
https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/snf064_modestproposal_swift_ava_128kb.mp3

Sorry for the 7th version of this one, I don't usually do this as you know.
But I read it for another purpose (off LV) and didn't want to "waste" this perfectly good recording. There were a number of footnotes in my original reading, but I cut them all out - just in case it sounds a bit weird here and there - I think I got them all.
Cheers, Ava.

Hi, Some_Old_Bird,

Thanks for your contribution to Vol. 64! :) I've just had time to listen to a bit of your recording so far, but you have an excellent recording voice with clear articulation and a nice sense of drama. I'm sure you will find many listeners interested in your choice of subject matter. :)
---------------------

Your recording has a few technical issues which we need to address, particularly volume. I looked back through your posts to see if you had done the "one minute test" to get feedback on technical issues, and it looks as if your test did not upload (?). If so, I would recommend uploading it again now, or you might upload a section of this recording about the Boxer Rebellion and getting some feedback on it. There are some techies here on LibriVox who can help with technical problems.

Your volume is low. It is 77.8 db, and it needs to be about 89db. You can tell it is low by looking at the Audacity screen. On the screen, the recording should fill the space between -0.5 and +0.5. You will probably need to increase the volume by a factor of somewhere around 10.

However, before you increase your overall volume, you should smooth out any really loud spots. Myself, I just do this manually, using the "Amplify" command under "Effects." There is one really loud spot in your recording between 4:31.120-4:31.200, which is the syllable "caa" in "Catholic." If you were to decrease just the volume of this one syllable, then you could increase the volume of the whole recording more easily.
--------------------
Your file name needs a bit of correction. A file name should look like this:

snf064_titleofwork_authorlastname_yourinitials_128kb.mp3

So, your file name should look something like this: snf064_crisis_gam_sob_128kb.mp3

[Note: I'm not sure if "Gam" is the Rev. Jee Gam's last name; also, you can use the initials of your real name if you want, instead of "sob" (the initials of your forum name). The initials are just there so we can go back and identify who recorded the selection if we need to.]
--------------------
The title of your selection:

I notice that you used "boxer rebellion" in your file name. If you would like, we can tweak the name of your selection to read "The Boxer Rebellion from the Standpoint of a Christian Chinese (1900)." This would make it more searchable on the internet.
---------------------

These are all minor issues. Overall, this is a important read. While we are awaiting your technical fixes, our dedicated proof listener (DPL), Soupy, will PL your recording.

Thank you, again for your contribution.! :)

Regards,

Sue (Book Coordinator)

Edit: (written a couple of hours after original post): There is quite a bit of info about the Rev. Jee Gam on the internet. He came to the U.S. as a 14-year old immigrant from a rural village in China, was ordained in 1895 as a Congregational minister; his children all graduated from the University of California, and one of his sons, Dr. Pond Mooar Jee, did post-graduate work at Harvard.

Thanks Some_Old_Bird :)
Nicely read. However there are a few errors.

At the BEGINNING say: "[Title of Work], by [Author Name]" "This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please visit Librivox.org" you didn’t read the author name.

1:59 After --- we extend our heartfelt sympathy --- forgot to read
and we cannot but rejoice to say that all these martyrs are happy with their Lord in Heaven to-day. We also rejoice to know that the blood of the martyrs will become the seed of the Church.

4:26 repeated they attacked the Christians

5:37 The rioter, and those anxious to plunder would surely say: "The Christians are just the same as the Catholics," so they killed them to effect robbery. – you have to read it word for word – you inserted Ah before The Christians

15:21 Of course, I must admit that the Chinese Government, viz., the Empress Dowager, is also responsible for the present state of affairs in China. – you read vis a vie

16:18 If this is true there is great hope for China. We sincerely hope that she will at once abdicate and allow the Emperor, Kwang Hsu, to resume control -- repeated - we sincerely hope

At the END, say: "End of [Title], by [Author Name]" – didn’t read the authors name

No need to say this recording is in the public domain at the end
