Tricia,

On Section 14, please check:
0.22 for a repeat of the first phrase of the text
2.05 for another repeat "they have, there have usually . . . "

Thanks, MaryAnn! Apparently I wasn't into the editing groove at the start of that section.

OK, here is letter 18 - this was a long one! I recorded it in one sitting and then it has taken a week to edit it! Interesting to read some of the views of the time - and rather horrifying to hear how he talks about the Aborigines! I didn't know anything about this guy (Captain Foster Fyans) but he had an interesting and controversial life! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foster_Fyans

Interesting that the removal of the sandbar that he talks about in 1853 as taking "many and many a day" wasn't completed until 1883! Another 30 years after it was first proposed! He was right though, it increased the shipping to Geelong - which still plays second fiddle to Melbourne, however! ;)

Thanks Beth, I'd heard of Fyansford but had no idea who it was named after. I followed your link and noticed the link at the bottom of the page to the house of commons papers. I read the first one which was something I hadn't thought about.
In 1837 a letter to the Governor states (you need to read the exact wording) that by the queen laying claim to "new holland" all the original inhabitants became her subjects (yes we all knew that  ) AND were thus her Majesty's subjects and entitled to her protection , not aliens. and officials and troops were to be subject to inquests etc if they killed one of her subjects. Which seems somewhat at odds with actual happenings but nice to know they were never officially vermin.
