North-Pole voyages by Zachariah Atwell Mudge (1813 - 1888).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/north-pole-voyages-by-zachariah-atwell-mudge/

For more than three hundred years an intense desire has been felt by explorers to discover and reveal to the world the secrets of the immediate regions of the North Pole. Nor has this desire been confined to mere adventurers. This volume sketches the latest American efforts (from the second Grinnel expedition to that of the "Polaris"), second to no others in heroism and success, and abounding in instructive and intensely interesting adventures both grave and gay.
( From the preface)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/39013
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Several of my DPL projects are almost finished, so I have room for a new one.

The first three chapters are PL OK - rats and rabid dogs!

Great! Glad to have you!!! :9: Adding you as DPL and transferring this to Solos forum!

If you chance to notice some words which I butcher too terribly, feel free to correct my pronunciation too!

Thanks for having me. :D
This will be an interesting journey.

In regard to pronunciation, there is nothing to butchered or that needs changing.
I did notice a few words where the accented syllable is a bit off. The only one I remember is "horizon", where the "i" is a long sound and accented. ho-RYE-zon would be closer, instead of stressing the last syllable. (At least in American pronunciation). There was another similar one, but I don't recall at the moment. But, I'll make note in the future if you wish. I've taught English as a second language, mostly in Asia, so I know how irrational our spelling and pronunciation is. It is a miracle than anyone ever learns English, even as a native speaker, I think. And you do quite well. Of course there are many variations of English around the world, so sometimes it is not easy to say what is correct and what is incorrect.

Looking forward to the book.

Thanks! Only two or so words is way better than I expected. :) Yes, English pronunciation can be frustrating sometimes, especially when your mother tongue is strictly phonetic - read as it is written and always stress the first syllable in my case. Although after some time in English it is possible to intuitively guess how it should sound for most words.... Then of course, there are those words that I theoretically know how they should sound (like that "ho-RYE-zon"), but don't manage to recall this knowledge during reading.

Had time to listen to one chapter, then internet was down for 12 hrs after a car crash took out the cables for our region.

Anyway, 12 is PL OK.
