A Woman is a Weathercock by Nathan Field (1587 - 1620).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/a-woman-is-a-weathercock-by-nathan-field/
A Woman is a Weathercock is the first play by the former child star of the Jacobean stage, Nathan Field. The action takes place over a single day in London. A number of suitors vie over Sir John Worldly's three daughters: Bellafront, Katherine, and Lucida. These include the short-tempered soldier, Captain Pouts; the poetical buffoon, Sir Abraham Ninny; and the rich merchant, Strange. Quick-witted Nevill orchestrates multiple sham marriages and young Scudmore plans to elope with Bellafront, while the pregnant Mistress Wagtail seeks any husband who will have her. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.

  5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

Amends for Ladies is finished, so I am moving on to another city comedy and the only other solo play by the same author, Nathan Field.

If you're thinking about joining us on this project, you might like to know more about the characters. A star (*) before the name means the role is open - claim away!

SCRIPTS

You can view Google Docs or Google Webpage versions of each act, whichever you prefer to read from.

ACT 1: Google Doc | Google webpage
ACT 2: Google Doc | Google webpage
ACT 3: Google Doc | Google webpage
ACT 4: Google Doc | Google webpage
ACT 5: Google Doc | Google webpage

As usual, I would prefer to keep the casting of the main roles gender specific. The smaller roles can be claimed by any reader. I will play Nevill, and my niece and nephew will play the Page and Boy. I prefer not to allocate readers more than one role (if the project takes a very long time to complete, we can consider doubling-up later).

MALE ROLES
-Sir Abraham Ninny. 85 lines. Son of Sir Innocent Ninny and Lady Ninny. Newly knighted and a buffoon. Tries and fails to woo Lucida with his bad poetry.
-Pendant. 95 lines. Count Frederick's obsequious assistant. Rebuffs Mistress Wagtail's advances.
-Scudmore. [Pronounce Scood-more, not Scud-more] 70 lines. The romantic lead. Loves Bellafront, who is to be married to Count Frederick.
-Strange. 65 lines. A rich young merchant, famous for his flashy clothes and wealth. Disguises as a soldier and challenges Pouts to a duel.
-Captain Pouts. [Pronounce Powts, not Poots] 65 lines. Soldier and friend to Count Frederick. Becomes angry when Kate, whom he loves, is betrothed to Strange.
-Count Frederick. 65 lines. Rich nobleman. Prospective husband for Bellafront and loved by Lucida.
-Nevill. 60 lines. Friend of Scudmore and the puppet master of the play.
-Sir John Worldly. 50 lines. Father of the three maids: Bellafront, Kate, and Lucida.
-Sir Innocent Ninny. 10 lines. Father to Sir Abraham and a bit of a dolt.

FEMALE ROLES
-Mistress Wagtail. 35 lines. Having slept with several men before the play begins, she is now pregnant and after any man who will have her.
-Bellafront. 20 lines. Oldest daughter of Sir John. Loves and loved by Scudmore, but betrothed to Count Frederick.
-Katherine (aka Kate). 20 lines. Loves and is betrothed to Strange. Pursued by Captain Pouts.
-Lucida. 15 lines. Moons over Count Frederick, even though her father thinks Sir Abraham the better match.
-Lady Ninny. 10 lines. Wife to Sir Innocent and mother to Sir Abraham. Always drunk, so please consider slurring her lines.

MALE/FEMALE ROLES
-Narrator.
-Servingman 1. <10 lines. Captain Pouts servant.
-Servingman 2. <10 lines. The Ninnys’ servant.
-Boy. 10 lines. Count Frederick's servant.
-Page. 10 lines.
-Parson, 2 lines / Tailor, 1 line / Bowlers, 1 line (Let's make this one role: please submit as one file)

The short-tempered soldier Captain Pouts for me please.

How come the only other ranks that wants to advertise his status with signs on his garden gate is the Private?

Cheers,
Chris

ah, young Stoofy again. I notice I'll hear his voice change every year in one of your plays.

Boy very nicely done, especially the aside. He's not to be fooled easily. The poem was very sweetly narrated.

Totally PL ok. Good first submission to the play. Now waiting for Scarlett....

It's getting to the stage where I will have to pre-record all the boy lines for every remaining city comedy before his voice breaks!
