THE COMPLETE WORKS OF ARTEMUS WARD PART 4, TO CALIFORNIA AND RETURN by CHARLES FARRAR BROWNE aka Artemus Ward(1834 - 1867).

Charles Farrar Browne, a native of Maine, became famous as a writer and lecturer under the name of Artemus Ward. Like his friend Mark Twain, Browne worked as a type-setter in his youth and in 1858, began publishing a series of letters, essays, and stories told in the first person by a droll, illiterate rube with a good meas-ure of subtle common sense who commented on the events and fads of the day. Taking his character to the stage as a lecturer, Browne became an early-day prototype of what we now name a stand-up comedian. Artemus Ward was such a favorite of President Abraham Lincoln that the chief executive read one of the Ward stories to his assembled cabinet officers before getting down to the business of discussing the proposed Emancipation Proclamation. Browne’s writings became popular in England as well as in Amer-ica, and he travelled to Britain to perform his Artemus Ward lec-tures and contribute to the comic magazine Punch. Browne con-tracted tuberculosis and died at the age of thirty-two in Southamp-ton. (There was a real Artemus Ward, a general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution.) ( Delmar H. Dolbier)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'm working on the author database and found this author added as a new entry. All other works by Artemus Ward (penname) were credited to Artemus Ward. It's like Mark Twain; the intros/outros don't say "Tom Sawyer by Samuel Clemens." :)

Just an FYI, and a suggestion that you use Artemus Ward in the intros/outros and file name.

I PLd Chapter 1! Just a few notes:

You're missing a few lines in the disclaimer at the beginning, I will paste the whole thing, the ones that are missing are underlined
o "Chapter [number] of THE COMPLETE WORKS OF ARTEMUS WARD PART 4, TO CALIFORNIA AND RETURN. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
o If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
o Say:
"THE COMPLETE WORKS OF ARTEMUS WARD PART 4, TO CALIFORNIA AND RETURN, by Artemus Ward. [Chapter]"

9:32 - “at last…” repeat and pause, on second one should be “Americanos” not “americans”

I hope to get to the rest later today!

Got through section 4! A few notes here, too:

I don't know whether you were reading the long intro or the abbreviated one, but you're missing some words either way. I'll paste them both and will underline which parts in each would be missing:
o "Chapter [number] of THE COMPLETE WORKS OF ARTEMUS WARD PART 4, TO CALIFORNIA AND RETURN by Artemus Ward. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
o If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
o Only if applicable, say:
"[Chapter title]"

or

o "Chapter [number] of THE COMPLETE WORKS OF ARTEMUS WARD PART 4, TO CALIFORNIA AND RETURN.
[Chapter]"

5:19 - stumble (he heh)

5:54 – heard 'Theres folly's harvest in a reaping' – text says 'There folly's harvest is a reaping' (just for your information, as it is Standard PL, I don't comment on most added/ommited/changed words, except if it changes the meaning. Let me know if you want me to do it differenty)

11:20 – missing word ‘line’ in 'Overland line'

20:17 – heard ‘core’, text says ‘corps’

Love your energy! Can't wait to listen to more! Be back later to do more!

Finished section 5! Unfortunately this one was a bit rougher than the others, but not too bad. Here are the notes:

Again,I don't know whether you were reading the long intro or the abbreviated one, but you're missing some words either way.

[Chapter]"

0:23 - missing 'city' in 'Great Salt Lake City'

0:30 - I think I heard a repeat of 'all', not too sure, but you may want to take a listen

5:01 - repeat of 'I'

6:06 - missing text - 'The Revelation of Joseph Smith'

14:03 - missing text - 'and they shall pass by the angels and the gods, which are set there'

Lastly, missing a few things from the outro. I'll underline what you missed.
o At the end of the section, say:
"End of [Chapter]"
o If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
o At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of THE COMPLETE WORKS OF ARTEMUS WARD PART 4, TO CALIFORNIA AND RETURN, by Artemus Ward. "

Looking forward to the last two chapters!
