The Vegetable; or, From President to Postman by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896 - 1940).
” “Any man who doesn’t want to get on in the world, to make a million dollars, and maybe even park his toothbrush in the White House, hasn’t got as much to him as a good dog has—he’s nothing more or less than a vegetable.”

Such is the preface of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s only outing as a playwright. The action begins when 35-year-old railway clerk Jerry Frost gets drunk off a bootlegger’s potent hooch on the eve of Warren G. Harding’s presidential nomination. As a result, the second act takes place entirely within Jerry’s intoxicated fantasies, where he has become the new U.S. President and must deal with an assortment of colorful characters and situations. It is here where comic farce and political satire come to intriguing blows, as Fitzgerald finds opportunities to comment (discreetly or not) on the political climate of his day. When his pseudo-presidency goes all to pieces, Jerry’s fantasy comes crashing down, and as he comes to his senses in the third act, we find that his career aspirations have become decidedly less lofty.

Though decidedly a minor work from The Great Gatsby’s author, The Vegetable finds him skewering the American Dream’s ethos in ways he would never do again. It’s lighthearted, naughty, irreverent, and does just the trick to escape—even if briefly—from our turbulent times. ( Tomas Peter)
  1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text: https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=njp.32101065310714;view=1up;seq=9 (a more convenient PDF version is available here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vdm5TiiiKVBWpUD3zzpcZC9Laba7TZW2/view)
  5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Many thanks to Chuck for suggesting this play. I couldn't resist offering it now, seeing as it's newly in the public domain and a work from a major American author. Oh, and it's hilarious. What's not to like?

A DPL is welcome. I also wouldn't be averse if someone volunteered to edit. Even if they wanted to share duties, that's fine. This is a long play, and quite a handful for one person to deal with. Unless they love the process, in which case this is the project for you.

The characters are described in rich detail within the play itself, so you don't need me to offer profiles. Fitzgerald goes above and beyond in that department. I'm thinking of biting the bullet and playing Jerry myself. Most of the roles, including the narrator, are quite sizable, so be warned. There are only a couple smaller roles for those who don't want a large commitment.

Now to await a MW!

Snooks the Bootlegger, please. No names, no pack drill.

(Okay, hands up everyone who figured I'd take this role. )

Since I don't really do a good American accent, may I play it with my best "criminal tendencies" Australian accent? (Huh, that guy on Sesame Street trying to fence a letter of the alphabet. I could've sold Ernie the entire Comic Sans font in thirty seconds. )

"Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and Snooks who gets out on Thursday..."
