I found a piece, "The Soul of the Violin", in an old book I have, Pieces for Prize Speaking Contests printed in 1899 ,that I would like to do. I looked up the author on line, and found the book in Google Books:

Please let me check with those more knowledgable before you record! A few things I note:
1. Google is not a reliable source for us .
2. Princeton University should be OK.
3. The copyright page is clear at the beginning of the scan.
4. Would this piece be better in the non-fiction collection?

Wayne, you have the go-ahead There is another version on a more reliable source, but it is not as clear. Apparently we don't rely on Google as many countries block Google, so it's not acceptable for group projects.

No, this is a story of a man who was trying to part with a 1781 violin.

This brings up a question. What is the policy in this situation. Someone wrote a short story, it easily met the PD times and it was published as part of an anthology. Then, someone else put together an anthology years later and installed that story and copyrighted that anthology. Are all of the stories, even though they were written centuries ago, not eligible for LV usage?

In answer to your earlier question, the copyright date on the anthology would be the one we use … so a 1750 story in a 2018 anthology would have a 2018 copyright. We would have to locate an earlier version i.e. a pre-1924 anthology. But the 1930 edition of a 1920 anthology wouldn't work. Even a single word changed would mess us up and put us in legal jeopardy. Our favorite sources are Project Gutenberg and Hathi Trust as their copyrights are well-researched and they are backed by legal experts.

Thanks for the clarification. My problem was that I found it in a 1899 book I own, so it was good, but then trying to find a place online with the same book. I did, but a better copy in another book with a 1907 publish date.

So, I have found a great poem I would love to include. It is by Amy Lowell, 1874 - 1925. I found it on "poets.org" and at the bottom is says "this poem is in the Public Domain. But I guess that is not enough. Is there any way to find a poem in Gutenberg, or do you have to go through all their anthologies one by one, page by page to see if it is there somewhere?

I'm not sure 'clarification' is the right word... clear as mud
And if you can't find an online source, if you can scan and send the copyright page, we accept that.

As for the poem, this collection doesn't include poetry. However, there is an ongoing poetry collection viewtopic.php?f=19&t=73084 and I see Rapunzelina has some guidelines for poetry copyright, so you may be OK with your source. I'd check with her.

You can disregard part of the previous post. I did some more research on the poet and found the name of an anthology of her poems. I looked up that name in Gutenberg, and found it, and the poem I would like to do is in that book, so I guess I am able to do it. It just shows that Google really is your friend, and if you put in the right search parameters, and keep clicking, you can find almost anything.
