The next one will be fun (for me, at least). It has some French quotations in it. I can understand them, but not pronounce them believably. I may have to read them in English instead.

Oh, French... I unfortunately do not understand this nice language. And I am afraid that will be against the LV policies to change the language if the original passages are in French...

We may have a problem there, because I'm completely at sea with French pronunciation, and none of the friends I approached can help. Give a listen to this and see what you think.

I'm getting good help with French from Ezwa, and should be able to substitute for my English translations soon. No need to review Chapter 05 before I get that fixed. Chapter 06 is ready.

I question a "rule" that forbids translating a very brief French citation in an otherwise all-English book. Anybody who listens to the book obviously understand English. But maybe not French--I certainly don't. So not translating the French passage makes the book less intelligible and thus less useful to folks like me.

I could add the translation parenthetically, I suppose, but that breaks the "rule" about adding anything to "the work."

How would you suggest we handle this?

I think that the "rule" is actually only one - "read as it stands", but I can not find right now where I have read it or why I know that...
My feeling is that this comes from the idea, that at Librivox readers just change the format of the written book to an audio format, keeping the original source as much as possible unchanged. Read exactly as it stands. After all, if the author - Sir Elioth Smith in this case - intended the passage to be in French (or Latin in many works! Even less people can understand that.) he obivously had his reasons and it is not for us to change his intention, as it is still his book, just made 'listenable' by your voice...
I am bad at explaining, I am afraid, but that is about how I feel it.

I have heard more than one case, while listening to LV audiobooks, where passages in another language is done by other voice and edited in. I think it is the best solution in a case when there is more than just one-two words and the reader is not sure about the pronunciation.

Just my two cents.
