The Boys' and Girls' Pliny - Book I & II by Pliny the Elder (23 - 79) and others.

This project is now complete. All files can be downloaded from the catalog page here:https://librivox.org/boys-and-girls-pliny-1-by-pliny-the-elder/
The Natural History of Pliny the Elder is one of the largest single works to have survived from the Roman Empire. The full work consists of 37 books, covering more than 20.000 topics ranging from astronomy and mathematics to botany and precious stones. The book became a model for later encyclopaedias, and gives a fascinating overview of the state of scientific knowledge almost 2000 years ago. This version of the Natural History (or, the "Pliny") has been adapted for a younger audience.

This first volume contains Book I (Dedication) and Book II (An Account of the World and the Elements) out of a total of 9 books. ( Foon)

  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/58589
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

For a prospective MC:

- It seems I have done goofed when entering the authors... I tried entering the editor John Stuart White (1847-1922), but instead I've ended up with Hugh Gerard Evelyn-White in my first post. I hope that doesn't cause any problems

- While editing the filename template in my first post, I realised that calling it "Volume 1" would probably be better than having "Book I & II" in the title. Can this be changed in the system? I'm planning on reading everything, but as it is a huge project, I would like to split it into multiple LV books. I think mostly a division by books (there's 9 in total) would be sensible, except book 1 is only the dedication, which wouldn't work so well as a standalone project!
Any advice is appreciated. :)

Looks interesting - I'll set it up and we'll juggle the titles to have it display in order in the catalogue. Back soonish

I've set it up, much of the naming we can adjust as you go along . But I've made a couple of suggestions which I think from experience with multi volume oddly named books would work and which are difficult to change later.
Filename boysandgirlspliny1_##_pliny_128kb.mp3 keeps things in order without commenting on the actual contents
As does beginning and ending the recording with section 1 then saying what is in it.

Thank you Anne! I'll set up the contents of the MW when I get back from work I think. I have a few last bits to finish up on my current solo, but then I'm looking forward to getting started. :D

Could I get a section 0 for the introduction? :)
EDIT: Nevermind about section 0, the chapter numbers and section numbers won't line up anyways.

Hi Anthony,
I've uploaded section 3 and 4 for PL (I'll get to the introduction and dedication later).

I'd just like to say, I'm happy with any comments you have on my recordings. You absolutely don't have to, since this is standard PL, but if you notice things like sloppy editing, sloppy pronunciation, mispronunciation, small background noises, a slightly longish or shortish pause, etc etc, I'm happy to hear them. I'd rather do more work for a better recording, than have no PL notes to address while there's still room for improvement.

Again, you absolutely don't have to put in more effort, but is there's anything that jumps to attention and you think "I'll not mention this since it falls outside of standard PL", please DO share your thoughts! :D

Cheers,
Foon

Hi Anthony,
I've changed the status of the uploaded sections back to "assigned", since I didn't include footnotes (I sort of automatically read over them), but I think they would actually be interesting to include--I'll let you know when the versions with footnotes are up!
