A Deal With The Devil by Eden Phillpotts (1862 - 1960).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/a-deal-with-the-devil-by-eden-phillpotts/
A Deal with the Devil is a classic tale with a humorous twist. We find that on the night preceeding his 100th birthday Grandpapa, a cantankerous yet loveable sort, has made a deal with the devil, which his granddaughter, in part, wil pay. ( Angelique G. Campbell)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/47246
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Welcome first-time BC
This project is now set up in the database. Since this will be your first project as soloist/book coordinator (BC), you will need to set up a password for access to the workflow system so you can enter the information into the section compiler which then appears in the "Magic Window" in the top post. Here are some links to detailed instructions for logging into the system and setting a password the first time, as well as for entering and editing information in the section compiler.

Instructions for BCs and DPLs

A version of the above is also in the LibriVox wiki in case you can't access Google Docs for some reason.

ID3 tags will be added during cataloging so you don't need to add them to your files.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Sections can be added by you or deleted by me. I'll leave this thread here in the Launch Pad for a day or so longer before I move it to the Going Solo forum, to see if a DPL (Dedicated Proof Listener) volunteers. If you already have someone in mind as DPL just let me know. I've added some information to the MW merely as a suggestion. Feel free to make changes (e.g. add the chapter number before the chapter name, shorten longer chapter names, etc.). The contents of the MW will appear on the final project page that potential listeners will see and it will be used to create the ID3 tags that appear on their mp3 player. Again, welcome to your first solo project.

Welcome first-time BC
Thank you; I appreciate the time you took to provide me with information, and always for the encouragement.
This was much easier than I had feared it would be; a huge *Congrats* to whomever crafted this marvelous MW and those who help all use it so well!

MW looks fine but one little change is needed. Archive.org doesn't like " so we have to use two ' instead. It looks almost the same (" versus ''). The former has some special meaning to their server (which hosts are audio files) and it has a bit of a fit when it sees an " in the title field of the MW. While it doesn't matter until the book is finished, it's best to change it now.

Thank you.
That is odd, but I think I have it corrected now.
Please advise if not.

Angelique,
Do you mind if I tag in as DPL?

BTW: For solo projects you don't have to put in the word counts. You're reading it all, short or long. Certainly no harm having them but if you don't want to spend the time on it then it isn't necessary. The word counts are used on group projects so readers can decide how long of a reading they want to claim.

I'd be thrilled if you'd DPL this project, Linny!

I added the word count, in part, so that prospective prooflisteners didn't see 24 SECTIONS!! and quickly run away. *Laugh*
Too, we'll be better able to tell if a great deal of time is included in the recording. I read at about 140 wpm. So, if a 1,000 word section is running 20 minutes, we'll have a data to indicate that something isn't QUITE there.

ALWAYS though, please, feel free to share those tips with me. There is still much to learn about LV and I'm deeply touched by those providing great guidance.

Thank you x3 for helping me here!

Angelique,
You have indicated standard PL. Please take a moment, prior to your first section upload, and make sure this is the level you want. The FAQ link provides the breakdown. Word perfect is generally for religious or highly scientific works but there is a Special level in between where you can can add anything above and beyond standard. If you want more than standard there is no need to change the posting, just let me know. I want you to be pleased with your final product.

I was glad to see this project come up. I was hoping you would claim the other as a solo so this makes me happy. I’m looking forward to it. Enjoy!

Awww, Linny!
Thanks! Sometimes, people provide kind compliments, and while I do always sincerely appreciate the time they took to do so, it can be difficult to weight them on an overly generous/sincerity continuum. I had a clear feeling that you were not only being "nice," and this note clearly confirms that sense. *GRIN*

I considered completing Battle of the Books as a solo project, but with sections at 30-50 minutes long, it becomes almost impossible to self-analyze for furture improvement. Your hopes that I would mean much to me. *Smile*

I will be genuinelly *THRILLED* if you will provide me with any notes (and coaching) regarding pacing, as well as on consistency of vocalizations (whileI note that the protagnoist's voice grows younger through the story), sustenation of energy, breath marks (a most highly subjective preference, I've discovered in reading professional narrator forums) ... and well, everything and anything you're willing to share Linny.

I want, and will WORK, to have this to professional audiobook standards (with, of course, LV sound specs).
While I do not wish to tax you with coaching-type PL, I believe, from your previous notes and in a quick review of your vast experience here on LV, that you will help me to grow as a narrator. The value of that cannot be over-stated. *Smile*

I am, sincerely, very well pleased to have your involvement on this project, Linny; I think it's a great one.
It's a humorous morality tale that should be a lot of fun to narrate.

The primary character, Grandpapa, he's a card ... using a morphing deck!

I plan to begin recording tomorrow or later tonight; you are never expected to PL with rapidity.
We shall complete the book well together.

Highest Regards,

I've only had a few professional projects. For me it took all the fun out of it so I didn't peruse it further. I'll help how I can and be more critical in the PL notes for you. I'll be sure to mark the ones we need done for LV and the rest will be optional for you. You can either edit those or use the comments as consideration in future recordings.

In your signature line you can leave a note to PLers that you would appreciate CC (constructive criticism) or be specific about whatever you are working on at the time, e.g. character voices, pacing, pronunciation. For standard PL projects, if you don't have a note, we can't give you anything but basic feedback. Even with a note some PLers aren't comfortable with that or don't have the time.

Dear Linny,
Whatever you can do will be most helpful. I know there are times when you won't have a great deal of chance to provide any extensive notes. *Smile* And that's perfectly okay.

ABSOLUTELY, I do not want this to become "work" for you! That defeats my purpose entirely. *Smile* I WANT this to be an enjoyment, far beyond I wish for it to be at Big Publisher pro level. If it should become burdensom, then please let me know; it means I am doing something ENTIRELY wrong. *SMILE*

I have been meaning to place CC in my signature line.
Thank you for reminding me that it's an option.

Yes, I appreciate fine PLers; I do my best to provide good, targeted notes and so have a real sense of the quiet, but marvelous job of prooflisteners.
*SMILE*
I see you provide that service often to LV; your contribution, as with so very many of you who have been here for years, is truly tremendous. From a small site to https://archive.org/search.php?query=Librivox
I have such respect for and delight in that, and YOU helped make it happen.

*Smile* Never to gush praises, but I'm well pleased to be here for the journey.

Hmmm ... and so ... off to finish the final read and notes for A Deal With the Devil. (Ha. A little funny to me in conjuction with the above "journey" statement. Strange sense of humor here.)

I shall have recordings out to you soon.
*SMILE*

So Thankful!
