The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran (1883 - 1931).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-prophet-version-3-by-kahlil-gibran/
The Prophet is a book of 26 prose poetry fables written in English by the Lebanese-American poet and writer Kahlil Gibran. It was originally published in 1923 by Alfred A. Knopf. It is Gibran's best known work. The Prophet has been translated into over 108 different languages, making it one of the most translated books in history, and it has never been out of print. The prophet, Al Mustafa, has lived in the city of Orphalese for 12 years and is about to board a ship which will carry him home. He is stopped by a group of people, with whom he discusses topics such as life and the human condition. The book is divided into chapters dealing with love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, houses, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death. 1. Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/files/58585/58585-h/58585-h.htm
    .
  2. Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  3. The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):
    • "Chapter [number] of The Prophet. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"The Prophet, by Kahlil Gibran. [Chapter]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
      .
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Prophet, by Kahlil Gibran. "

There should be ~5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.
    .
  4. Example filename prophet_##_gibran_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. prophet_01_gibran_128kb.mp3)
    .
  5. Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader

(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
    • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: maryannspiegel
    • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.

OK, Your MW is set up.

For a solo project, you are the Book Coordinator. That means you fill out the Magic Window and post your links and times in the window when you upload your files.

You'll need to start by logging into the magic window. Instructions are in the BC How-to; and this is a more detailed version of the First Login instructions (with pictures!) Please be sure to read all of the BC How To document, as that will give you more information on your role as a BC.

Next, you'll need to start entering section (or chapter) titles. I've entered the first couple to get you started.

Then you are ready to start recording. When you upload a section, it's your responsibility to add the link and duration (mm:ss) to the Magic Window. Link from the uploader goes in the "listen URL" column, duration goes in the "notes" column. You also change the "status" to "ready for PL". Then be sure to post in the thread that a new section is ready for PL so your DPL knows there is something new.

We won't worry about a DPL just yet - folks often see new projects and volunteer to listen before anything is posted. If no one sees this, we will advertise once you have a section or two ready to listen to.

If you have questions, or if you have any trouble with the instructions in the BC how to, please post and we'll work through it together. There is a bit of a learning curve when you do your first solo. You've picked a nice size book - not too long and something that you are interested in, so it should be a manageable and enjoyable process for you.

Pardon me for the interjection, but I wanted to say *Thank You* Mary Ann.
In reading this post as setting up my first solo project, I'm much more clear on where to find information by which to proceed.

Wishes for succcess on this project, Adam!

Hi MaryAnn,

I wanted to give you an update and let you know that I am nearly finished with recording. I have one chapter left to record, and have two chapters edited.

Chapter 1 - https://librivox.org/uploads/maryannspiegel/prophet_01_gibran_128kb.mp3 (6:56)

Chapter 2 - https://librivox.org/uploads/maryannspiegel/prophet_02_gibran_128kb.mp3 (2:48)

I know I set out to have this complete by the beginning of the month, but I anticipate completing the project in the next week or so.

That's great Adam. Would you please post the links and times in the MW? For a solo, you are the BC and so that's part of your role.

Hello!

Am jumping the gun by volunteering to DPL, or do you already have someone in mind for this project?
Gren

(Though I haven't done proof listening on librivox before, I do have some experience in PLing for others.)
I was a young maid, a grey-haired woman
& a splendid warrior at one time
I flew with birds, swam on a wave
dove under the waves, dead among the fish.
I stepped on the ground, I had a living spirit.

OK Gren, you are set up.

PL instructions are here: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Guide_for_Proof-listeners

This project is "standard", which is generally, anything that makes you go "huh?".

Your reader page is here: https://librivox.org/reader/13287?primary_key=13287&search_category=reader&search_page=1&search_form=get_results

Click on "reader section details" link and you can see the PL status of the sections in the projects you are working on.

Finally, you'll need to access the MW in order to update the PL status for each section. Instructions are in the BC How-to; and this is a more detailed version of the First Login instructions (with pictures!)

If you have any trouble or questions, please post and we'll help you work through them.

So far, everything seems clear, but I'll let you know if I encounter any problems. :)

I wouldn't really call these PL notes, as that might imply there's been something to correct on these recordings so far. This is more of of a PL appreciative comment. :) (I'd feel like I'm not really doing much of a job PLing without saying this...)

I hope every recording I PL will be of a quality this high. It's clean, no gaps, no repeats, all the prescribed text read and all the recommended silences followed, plus your voice and reading style are really pleasant to listen to. I can't wait to listen to more.
