Hecyra: The Mother-In-Law by Terence (-195 - -159). Translated by Henry Thomas Riley (1816 - 1878)

Terence's six plays are comedies written while he was a slave to a Roman senator. NOTE: the main plot elements in Hecyra are quite unacceptable today: Pamphilus has just married a woman he does not recognize that he had earlier raped in a drunken fit; nor does she recognize him. His mistress Bacchis is upset with the marriage and rejects him. He then wanders off, returning only in time to discover his wife with a new child that can't possibly be his. It takes both Mother and Mother-in-Law, and Bacchis, to bring a happy ending out of this confusion.

mightyfelix suggested we look at the six plays by Terence; bluechien commented that this one could easily be by Moliere. Since we are going to run out of Moliere's someday, let's try this.

Gender neutral casting, and Kitty is yet again our wonderful DPL
    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/22188
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

As always, DPL please and the role of Bacchis here. After Mrs Pretty, I need a shorter role

I don't want to claim or anything, just wanted to cheer you guys on. I LOVE this play, and I suggest it at least once a year to students. I am sure it will be an amazing addition to the catalog, and I will certainly listen to it when it is done.

I had not thought about going back in time almost 2000 years to find a Moliere replacement but these do look good. Any other suggestions?

Thanks, Todd

May I claim Phidippus. Todd and I can be old men (or rather aged Athenians) together.

PS. I cannot see any lines for Phidippus in act 5.

I saw that people exited Phidippus's house and so put him into Act 5. Error fixed.

I think I behave badly in a non-age related fashion.

Well, seeing as it's one of the few male roles, I wasn't left with much choice. :P I will do my best with it.

I'm also in Act 5, by the way. Thought I should say so now, to prevent confusion later on.

Todd -- possible that you or Kitty can post a suggestion on pronouncing characters' names? Some seem clear, some more ambiguous, and since we all gossip about each other a lot by name, I'd like to hew to something.

I'd like to read Sostrata please! I've just had a read of this play, and I think it is very odd that Philumena (the pregnant wife) doesn't actually appear or speak - apart from some miscellaneous noises offstage!
