The Romance of Excavation by David Masters (1883 - 1965).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-romance-of-excavation-by-david-masters/
The Romance of Excavation: A Record of the Amazing Discoveries in Egypt, Assyria, Troy, Crete, etc., with Twenty-Nine Illustrations, by David Masters (Charles Edwin Brand, 1883-1965).

From the Foreword: "In the following pages I have sought to reveal some of the romance of excavation, to tell the fascinating story of the men who have gone out into the desert places and dug up long-lost cities and the fabled treasure of ancient kings." (Steven Seitel)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/romanceofexcavat00mastuoft/page/n7
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Well, here goes. I'll try my hand at a solo recording of this book. It will be my first solo. I hope I've followed launch instructions correctly. Please advise if something needs fixing and I'll get right to it.

I'm looking forward to this project.

Steven,

I can MC this for you.

The MW is started and tested.

I have made a few edits to the first post.

You will need to select genre(s) before this goes into the Librivox catalog.

As a soloist you are the also the BC (book coordinator) for this project (see links below with instructions and details).

Workflow first-time login instructions (with pictures):

Hi David, Kristine...

Thanks for signing up. This should be a fun project!

David ... there are 15 chapters PLUS a separate foreword...16 sections all together. I probably filled out the template wrong, sorry. Can I fix this or do you do it?

Re: selecting genres. Yes, I'll add those as soon as I can get back to my desktop machine. My iPad doesn't handle that particular pull-down menu very well. Or maybe it's just my fat fingers, I dunno.

Thank you both very much!

Steven,

It's probably the iPad, not you.

You can fix it !! As the project BC, you have 3 options for dealing with the Foreword:

1) Since it is so short, you can combine it with Chapter 1.

2) Once you get your Workflow login set up, you can add another section yourself; there is a "Add new section" button on the section compiler page.

3) You can skip the Foreword and just start recording with Chapter 1.

Consider the length of the Foreword and it's importance to the rest of the book when you make the choice.

David, Thanks.

I'm having trouble getting the workflow set up initially. I sent you a PM about it. Please advise.

Steve,

I will respond to the PM due to the type of information I may be communicating.

Chapter 16 has been uploaded.

This final chapter, Reader's Notes, collects in one out-of-the-mainstream place all the boring overhead: full title, publication data, dedication, foreword, pen name, etc. By parking all this dry stuff at the end of the book, rather than leaving it up front, the listener is immediately served up with the real meat of the story: the exciting discoveries made by the first "scientific" Tomb Raiders...oh, wait! I meant archaeologists.

Then, too, the interested listener is exhorted to seek out for herself copies of the the excellent B&W photographs that add much to the context.

Cheers,

Steve

Interesting speculation that papyrus could be invented by a child playing and his father being interested in the play.
