The State of the Union address is a speech presented by the President of the United States to a joint session of the United States Congress, typically delivered annually. The address not only reports on the condition of the nation but also allows the President to outline his legislative agenda (for which he needs the cooperation of Congress) and national priorities. This album contains recordings of addresses from Ulysses S. Grant. (Wikipedia)
How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.
Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: Special - Please follow text while PLing. I'm not looking for word perfect. The language is sometimes awkward and following the text will help identify errors which the ear alone may not find. Linny will act as DPL
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!
Set your recording software to:
Channels: 1 (Mono)
Bit Rate: 128 kbps

"Section [number] of State of the Union Addresses (1869 - 1876). This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
Say: "[section title: President, date of address, and part number (if applicable)]"
END of recording
At the end of the section, say: "End of [Section]"
If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
At the end of the book, say (in addition): "End of State of the Union Addresses (1869-1876)"
There should be ~5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.
Please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
AFTER recording Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The latest version of Audacity is recommended for noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide. Save files as
128 kbps MP3
stateoftheunion1869_1876_##_various_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. stateoftheunion1869_1876_01_various_128kb.mp3)
Example ID3 V2 tags
Please ignore tags - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.
Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
Section breakdown: Note: If you are claiming all sections for an Address feel free to split the sections differently. Be sure to post your preferred start/stop for your DPL.

I'd like to claim Ulysses S. Grant, December 5, 1870, both sections. Question on the sections - Does it have to be two, or can it be more?
~Erik
Hi Erik,
For that year it needs to be two sections. The break can be moved, if you think there is a better place due to subject, but it has to be two or it messes up the numbering for everyone else. Some of the other sections (1, 4, 5, 12) are longer as a single section but have a shorter overall word count. You might want to wait until I get the MW is up before you confirm your claim. The section breakdown is only for the years where a single section would be too long. Let me know.

realisticspeakers,
Thank you for helping out again. Happy 2019!
Are you sure it's the last two sections you wanted? I'm fine with it, it's just a strange pick for you.
It is indeed a strange pick. It is not what I intended at all.
Can I please also have 1875 part 1?

Readers Wanted! Excellent. Thank you, Maria but can we be in the regular Readers Wanted and not Short Works? The sections here are so long that short works doesn't really work for us. We have tried it before. If the length of the work has anything to do with the decision, this volume will be around 8 to 8.5 hours when completed.

Sure, no problem, Linny! I was waffling between which place to put this, and only decided on Short Works since technically it isn't a book. But it doesn't matter to me either way.
