Lourdes by Émile Zola (1840 - 1902). Translated by Ernest Alfred Vizetelly (1853 - 1922)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/lourdes-by-emile-zola/
This book describes a five day national pilgrimage to the holy shrine of Lourdes, where miracle cures are hoped for. The central character is a priest, Pierre, whose faith is faltering. He is accompanying his childhood sweetheart who has been stricken with paralysis and whose faith is strong. In the background of the great irony of this relationship, there are numerous sub-plots, some tragic, some whimsical, involving a large number of characters, set in the midst of organised chaos in the pilgrimage site. Through Pierre's mental and spiritual experiences Zola explores the role of religious faith in a society coming to terms with science and reason. ( Peter Tucker)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Erin (Newgatenovelist) has kindly offered to be DPL for this project, for which I am most grateful.

I'm checking in, and this looks even better than I thought. I didn't realise Vizetelly was the translator! What a find.

MW coming up.

edit: Let me know if any changes are needed. You don't need to give the birth/death dates of the translator in the intros.

Thanks a lot Dave.
Could I please have one more section - sorry, when I said 25 I meant in addition to Sect 0 (I've fallen foul of that before, but the other way around!).
Will get going very soon.

Section 01 is PL OK.

I don't know that it will crop up again, but a general teaching moment (I can't help myself!) - the first syllable of gyration/gyrate/gyroscope sounds like the first part of 'jive':

Hi Peter,

Just to let you know I'll be away from my desk for a few days at the start of the week and probably won't PL until I'm back. Happy recording!
