Not that I'm any great expert, but I found contextualising helped. Rather than being broken, the language is quite erudite but has a strange feel to it. I think Burton (writing in the mid 19th century) tried to give a historic feel to the Tales by using - what was to him - archaic language which leads to us having this odd portmanteau of Regency-ish English with a Victorian inflexion. To read my passages, I put myself in the shoes of a traveller around the turn of the 1800s telling his peers when he returned of the bizarre things that he had encountered. It doesn't help with all the unfamiliar wording (for example, I think the use of "an" as "if" is even older) but it helps you get your mind through a good chunk of it.

What Paul already said--it's not broken, it's oooooooold. Almost all books we read at LibriVox have old-fashioned language (after all, the books we record are at least 95 years old), but this one is an especially tricky one. It's not an easy read for any of us, I think. The only advice I have for you, is: take your time. I don't know how fast you usually speak, but for me (as a naturally fast speaker) it really helps to consciously slow myself down when I'm reading a difficult text.
